BASEBALL: Jered Weaver wins 20th to keep Angels alive

Jered Weaver earned his 20th victory of the season in the Angels' 7-4 win over the Texas Rangers on Friday. (Tim Heitman / US PRESSWIRE)

ARLINGTON, Texas - It has been dismissed as an old-fashioned measure of a pitcher's worth, wins having been superseded by the WHIPs, FIPs and BABIPs of new-age stat-ology.

But Jered Weaver has a bit of the old-fashioned ace in him.

Weaver became the first 20-game winner in the American League this season and only the seventh pitcher in Angels history to win 20 games in a season, holding the Texas Rangers to two runs in seven innings of a 7-4 victory Friday night at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

"It's a great personal accomplishment, no doubt," Weaver said. "Go back to the no-hitter (in May) - I never thought in a million years I would throw a no-hitter in the big leagues. And I never thought I would win 20 games in the big leagues.

"A lot has to go your way to get to that and the guys picked me up again tonight. ... It's a great personal accomplishment, like I said. But I'm all for winning the World Series before any of that stuff."

Weaver's effort did little to move the Angels closer to that goal. The Oakland A's and Baltimore Orioles also won Friday, leaving the Angels the same familiar 2 1/2 games out of the first wild-card spot (the Orioles) and two out of the American League's final playoff spot (the A's). The Tampa Bay Rays did finally lose, snapping an eight-game winning streak and dropping a game behind the Angels in the wild-card race.

Weaver is in another race, competing with Rays left-hander David Price,

Detroit Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander and Seattle Mariners right-hander Felix Hernandez (primarily but not exclusively) for the AL Cy Young Award. Weaver finished second to Verlander last year, but Friday's win puts him first in the American League in wins, win percentage (.833) and WHIP (1.00) with the lowest batting average (.213), on-base percentage (.262) and OPS against (.597) while sitting third in ERA (2.73).

"We're not in a pennant race without him, obviously," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "If you just look at what he's done virtually every start, I don't think there's a more consistent pitcher in our league.

"No doubt, he's a frontrunner (for the Cy Young Award). I think he's pitched the way you would expect an ace to pitch. He's had the type of year a Cy Young winner has."

Last month, I got treated to a surprise visit to Las Vegas by my husband!! It was one of these last minute surprises!! I got a text Thursday afternoon at work asking me to be packed to travel on Friday to a surprise destination!! ?I got the shock of my life when I got home and saw that our tickets were for Las Vegas!!! ?I had never been to Las Vegas but I looked up ?this website- Las Vegas Hotel Tips??which had great tips on how to plan a great trip to Las Vegas. ?We had a great hotel right on the Boulevard. ?The weather was great and as both of us like playing poker and roulette, we really enjoyed our short break in Las Vegas.

In fact we enjoyed playing poker so much ?over there that we decided to organise our own poker night with friends. One of the dishes I made on the day is what my brother BT calls Bapu's bhajias and my friend VP calls packed bhajias. ? I have named them Spicy bombs as that's what Hansa called them in her recipe book. ? In her recipe, she adds whole chillies and gathia to the boiled potatoes but I decided against that. ?I decided to remove the seeds from ?chillies and blend them with sev noodles as I thought that this would blend better and make the bhajias tastier. ?I was in one of those dare devil moods after my trip to the USA and wanted to see which of my friends had the guts to eat these spicy delicacies. ? I was expecting to see a few red sweaty ?faces but surprisingly, all my friends enjoyed them and found them to taste OK after a few drinks.

Ingredients for enough bhajias for 3-4 people?

12-16 new baby potatoes

For the batter to dip the potatoes:

2 cups of chick pea flour (often called gram flour or besan)
1 teaspoon salt
? teaspoon of Ajwain
small bunch of? fresh coriander cut finely (can use coriander powder too)
Pinch of soda bi carbonate

For stuffing No 1:

1 cup sev?( you can buy ready made sev noodles in most Asian stores)
4-5 fresh green chillies (washed and blended)
1 tsp ground sugar
small bunch of finely chopped coriander
2-3 tbsps lemon juice
1 tbsp oil

For stuffing no 2

5-6 cloves of ?blended garlic
1 teaspoons salt
1 tablespoon chillypowder
? teaspoon of cumin powder
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 tbsp sesame seeds
1tbsp dessicated coconut
small bunch of finely chopped coriander

For the Deep Frying:

1 litre of cooking oil ( I always use sunflower oil)

Method for both the stuffings:

Prepare the potatoes as below:?

1. Steam the baby potatoes with the skin on. I suggest steaming rather than boiling as you do not want the potatoes to over cook and break.

2. Once cooked, allow to cool and peel the skin from the potatoes.

?Prepare the stuffing No 1 (ingredients for 10-12 baby potatoes):

1. ?Crush the sev using your hands and mix all the ingredients listed under stuffing No 1 above in a bowl and leave for 20 minutes.

Prepare stuffing No 2 which will be hotter and spicer?(Ingredients for 4 baby potatoes)

1. Peel and blend the garlic using a pestle and mortar or a grinder.

2. Add salt and 1 teaspoon of lemon to the garlic to make the blending easier.

3. Remove the blended mixture to a mixing bowl and add the chilly powder and cumin powder to it

4.??Add the finely chopped coriander , dessicated coconut and ?sesame seeds to the mixture.

5. ?This mixture should resemble a firm paste.

Prepare the chick pea flour batter to dip your potatoes in:

1. Add one cup of water to the Chick pea flour and mix well. ?You may need to add half ?cup more to get the right thickness of the batter.

2. Add the salt, ajwain, fresh coriander and stir well.

3. The mixture should be fairly thick as shown in my picture.

4.? Allow this to rest whilst you heat the oil.

Now prepare the potatoes for both the stuffings:

1. Cut the potatoes across - but only half way? on one side; turn to the opposite side and cut the potato across half way again.

2. ?The stuffing with the sev should now be soft and?manageable?to use. If it feels too dry, sprinkle a couple of drops of water to moisten it.

3. ?Fill the potatoes with the stuffing mixture no 1:
4, ?Fill the potatoes with stuffing no 2:

? To finish making the bhajias:

1. To check if the oil is hot, drop a small drop of batter into the oil. If the oil is ready, the batter will rise to the top.

2. Turn the heat slightly low now.

3. Add a pinch of soda by carbonate to the chick pea mixture and stir.

3. Take one potato at a time; using a spoon, dip it in the chick pea flour mixture and transfer it to the oil -using a knife or a chopstick .

4. Allow it to cook one side and turn.

5. Once they look golden yellow, they are cooked and ready to serve with any chilly sauce.?

(AP) ? With Seimone Augustus and Maya Moore around, Lindsay Whalen's focus generally isn't on scoring. That doesn't mean she can't.

Whalen scored 20 points to lead the defending champion Minnesota Lynx in a 78-70 victory over the Seattle Storm in the opener of the Western Conference semifinals Friday night.

"Of course we know they're going to pay a lot of attention to Seimone and Maya, they're great shooters and great players," Whalen said. "We all know we have to step it up and make plays as well."

Augustus scored 19 points, Moore added 16 and Rebekkah Brunson had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Minnesota. Whalen also tallied six assists and four rebounds.

The Lynx shot 46 percent against a Storm team that held opponents to a league-low 39 percent this season, and hit 22 of 28 free throws ? including 8 for 10 from Whalen.

"They have multiple weapons out there," Seattle coach Brian Agler said. "If you give too much attention to any one person, someone else will take advantage of it. Tonight, (Whalen) took advantage."

Rookie reserve Shekinna Stricklen scored 13 points to lead the Storm. Katie Smith and Lauren Jackson added 12 points each, with all of but one of Jackson's coming in the first half.

Game 2 is Sunday at Seattle.

Jackson, a three-time WNBA MVP, didn't play in any of the teams' four regular-season games as she was training with the Australian national team for the London Olympics. The Lynx won three of those matchups.

Jackson played a season-high 27 minutes, but it wasn't enough as Seattle shot just 39.7 percent from the floor and never led. Minnesota improved to 18-0 when holding opponents below 40 percent this season.

"I didn't get the looks I was getting in the first half," Jackson said. "They changed their defense up. We definitely have to look at how we're going to combat that next game."

The Lynx, who went 16-1 at home in the regular season, turned the ball over nine times in the first 20 minutes and led just 33-27 despite Seattle's 29-percent shooting from the floor in the first half.

But Augustus and Whalen scored six points each and Brunson added three more as Minnesota opened the third quarter on a 15-8 run, and extended the lead to a game-high 17 on Candice Wiggins' 3-pointer with 2:38 left in period.

Seattle then answered with an 11-3 run to close the quarter, and responded again with a 9-2 run over a nearly 5-minute stretch when the Lynx jumped back ahead by 13 on Moore's runner with 6:38 to play. But six points was as close as the Storm would get, as Moore and Augustus hit clutch shots in the final two minutes and Minnesota made 5 of 6 free throws in the final 32 seconds to seal the victory.

"I thought we got decent shots, we were playing well, just all of a sudden we're not scoring and not getting back on defense," Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve said. "We have to have that focus when we don't score, they don't score. That's what let them back in it, a string of missed shots and then they made the barrage of 3s."

The Lynx and Storm face off in the postseason for the first time since the 2004 Western Conference semifinals, which Seattle swept en route to the first of its two league titles.

Minnesota is trying to become the first back-to-back champion since Los Angeles accomplished the feat in the 2001 and '02 seasons. The Houston Comets won the league's first four titles from 1997-2000.

Liver cells, insulin-producing cells, thymus can be grown in lymph nodes

Friday, September 28, 2012

Lymph nodes can provide a suitable home for a variety of cells and tissues from other organs, suggesting that a cell-based alternative to whole organ transplantation might one day be feasible, according to researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and its McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine. In a report recently published online in Nature Biotechnology, the research team showed for the first time that liver cells, thymus tissue and insulin-producing pancreatic islet cells, in an animal model, can thrive in lymph nodes despite being displaced from their natural sites.

Hepatitis virus infection, alcoholic cirrhosis and other diseases can cause so much damage that liver transplantation is the only way to save the patient, noted senior investigator Eric Lagasse, Pharm. D., Ph.D., associate professor, Department of Pathology, Pitt School of Medicine. Children with DiGeorge syndrome lack functional thymus glands to produce essential immune cells, and diabetes can be cured with a pancreas transplant.

"However, the scarcity of donor organs means many people will not survive the wait for transplantation," said Dr. Lagasse, whose lab is at the McGowan Institute. "Cell therapies are being explored, but introducing cells into tissue already ravaged by disease decreases the likelihood of successful engraftment and restoration of function."

In the study, his team tested the possibility of using lymph nodes, which are abundant throughout the body and have a rich blood supply, as a new home for cells from other organs in what is called an "ectopic" transplant.

They injected healthy liver cells from a genetically-identical donor animal into lymph nodes of mice at various locations. The result was an enlarged, liver-like node that functioned akin to the liver; in fact, a single hepatized lymph node rescued mice that were in danger of dying from a lethal metabolic liver disease. Likewise, thymus tissue transplanted into the lymph node of mice that lacked the organ generated functional immune systems, and pancreatic islet cell transplants restored normal blood sugar control in diabetic animals.

"Our goal is not necessarily to replace the entire liver, for example, but to provide sufficient cell mass to stabilize liver function and sustain the patient's life," Dr. Lagasse said. "That could buy time until a donor organ can be transplanted. Perhaps, in some cases, ectopic cell transplantation in the lymph node might allow the diseased organ to recover."

Burden of epilepsy in developing world described

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? The burden of epilepsy in poorer parts of the world could be readily alleviated by reducing the preventable causes and improving access to treatment, according to a review article published September 27 in the Lancet.

The researchers call for greater recognition from international and national health agencies to address the management of epilepsy in the developing world.

Despite being one of the most cost-effective disorders to treat, there are twice as many people living with epilepsy in low- and lower-middle-income countries than higher income nations and more than 60% of those affected in these regions are not accessing any appropriate treatment.

Lead author Professor Charles Newton, who works in the Wellcome Trust programmes in Tanzania and Kenya, said: "Epilepsy needs to be brought into the agenda of non-communicable diseases. It was not mentioned in the UN General Assembly Meeting in New York to address the global burden of non-communicable diseases, and yet it represents a substantial burden of ill health."

Epilepsy is a common disorder, particularly in poor areas of the world, but deriving accurate figures on the epidemiology of epilepsy in low- and lower-middle income countries is very difficult. There have been very few surveys to gather appropriate data and such studies tend to be expensive, especially for countries whose health research funding is likely to be very limited.

Professor Newton and Professor Hector Garcia, both Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellows, conducted a comprehensive review of academic articles about epilepsy in developing countries in order to piece together a picture of the burden of the disease in poorer parts of the world.

They conclude that the high number of people with epilepsy in these regions is likely caused by the higher incidence of risk factors, such as head trauma, complications during childbirth, and parasite infections such as pork tapeworm (neurocysticercosis), and river blindness (onchocerciasis).

The study also reveals the enormity of the treatment gap in poorer nations, with over 60% of people living with epilepsy in low- and lower-middle-income countries not accessing appropriate care. This is partly due to poor adherence to prescribed treatment but there remain huge barriers to accessing care, particularly in rural areas. The stigma associated with the disorder and cultural beliefs around causation is identified as a major problem, along with distance from a health-care facility and inadequate skilled manpower.

The epilepsy burden could be easily reduced by addressing some of the risk factors, say the authors. They highlight several ways in which epilepsy care could be improved at low cost, including by engaging traditional healers who for many people are the only point of care for epilepsy. Given the lack of expertise in management of epilepsy in poorer areas, they suggest that neurologists and psychiatrists should combine to set up services for the management of epilepsy in these regions.

"Sadly, adequate facilities for diagnosis, treatment and on-going management of epilepsy are virtually non-existent in many of the world's poorest regions. Many people with epilepsy or their families do not even know that they have a disorder that can be controlled with biomedical treatment, so it is vitally important that awareness is raised and medical care improved in these regions," added Professor Newton.

WHY IT MATTERS: Syria

The issue:

Syria's conflict is the most violent to emerge from last year's Arab Spring. The protests started peacefully but prompted a brutal crackdown by President Bashar Assad's government. The fighting has escalated into a civil war that has killed just over 30,000 people over the last year and a half, according to activists. Despite intervening in Libya, the United States has steered clear of taking military action or arming Syria's rebels.

___

Where they stand:

President Barack Obama called for Assad to step down more than a year ago and has sought consensus for a diplomatic power-transfer plan. He has been stymied by Russia and China, which have blocked efforts at the United Nations to end the Assad government. He has been unable to prevent a worsening civil war between Assad's forces and the rebels but remains opposed to using U.S. air power to prevent Syrian jets from flying and is against directly providing weapons to the opposition. His administration says such plans would further militarize Syria. Instead, it hopes better coordination among the opposition will help unify the country against Assad.

Romney has demanded "more assertive" tactics to end the Assad government, accusing Obama of a "lack of leadership." The Republican challenger has been vague on specifics. He says the U.S. should cooperate with partners to arm Syria's rebels. That stops short of calling for direct U.S. weapons deliveries and is a policy the Obama administration has adopted in limited fashion for several months. Romney also has spoken of possibly sending American troops into Syria if weapons of mass destruction are unprotected ? going slightly further than Obama, who calls WMD his "red line" in the conflict. And Romney wants more U.S. pressure on Moscow to break the diplomatic logjam.

___

Why it matters:

The Arab world's efforts to achieve stable democracies could hinge on Syria. Demonstrators ended dictatorships in Tunisia and Egypt, a U.S.-led mission helped defeat Moammar Gadhafi in Libya and a transition deal brought change to Yemen. But the four-decade-long Assad government has dug in. It is accused of torture and mass killings. And if it succeeds in keeping power, reform-wary leaders across the region could take it as a lesson that they can attack their own citizens and get away with it.

Syria's close alliance with Iran is important. Assad has facilitated Iran's assistance to militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah, destabilizing Lebanon while threatening Israel's security and American interests in the Middle East. The U.S. accuses Iran of managing Syria's repression to prop up its faltering ally. With Washington and Tehran competing for influence in the Arab world, change toward a more U.S.-friendly government in Syria would be a major strategic victory. Up to now, the only governments ousted in the Arab Spring were either U.S. allies or counterterrorism partners.

For Obama, Assad's perseverance also poses a credibility problem. The president has demanded that Assad leave but has ruled out several elements of American power to make that happen. He has limited the repercussions on Assad mainly to tighter U.S. sanctions and harsher rhetoric. For Romney, however, Syria offers no easy solution. The presence of al-Qaida-linked fighters and other extremists in the opposition makes members of both parties uneasy about offering greater U.S. aid. And no one wants greater instability on Israel's up-to-now secure northeastern border.

5 Tweet Formulas to Engage Your Clients and Customers - Ali Brown

Every day, Twitter is abuzz with clever comments from the likes of everyone from Rihanna to Martha Stewart to Seth Godin. It?s an equal playing field where people are free to share and discuss any topic under the sun. And, with 140 million users, it?s a great way for entrepreneurs to get known and connect with potential customers.

But, many business owners fall into the trap of using Twitter as a soapbox, rather than a tool for conversation. Below are five Tweet formulas to try that will engage your clients and customers.

Tweet Formula #1: Ask a question

This is one of my favorite ways to engage my audience online. People love to share their opinions, recommendations, or stories, so asking questions is a great way to spark a fun conversation. Let?s say you own a jewelry boutique. You could ask your Twitter fans for suggestions on what new products they would like to see in the boutique. Or ask them to share photos of how they wear jewelry they?ve bought from you (which gives you something fun to retweet!). Or share a story on what a special piece of jewelry meant to them.

If you?re a marketing consultant, you could tweet after the Super Bowl asking which ads your followers liked best. Or if you?re traveling to a new city, ask locals what yoga studios or cafes they recommend. Checking out the types of places your customers like to frequent could not only open the door to new connections, but you can also get a better understanding of what attracts your customers. (I just asked followers to share their worst old job moment, and between?Twitter and Facebook, got over 100 replies!)

Tweet Formula #2: Give ?em a ?behind-the-scenes? glimpse

Your job online is to show that you are not just a business, you are a person who owns a business. So posting tweets that show some personality and some behind-the-scenes ?footage? are always a hit.

During my recent launch, I tweeted about one of my team members whose 3-year-old son kept saying his mom ?works for Charlie Brown?? How can you not smile at a tweet like that? People respond to small ?slice of life? tidbits that are fun and relatable, but be sure to mix it up with more business-focused tweets, too.

If you?re getting ready for live event, you could snap a photo of you getting hair and makeup done or prepping behind the scenes and post it with a clever caption. (I do these all the time, because they are fun and candid.) They not only show you?re a real person, preparing for a personal moment, but they also remind your audience to watch.

Here?s another idea: If you?re flying to a client meeting, you could tweet about the delicious cupcakes you tried at the airport. Include the bakery?s Twitter handle so they?ll see it and possibly retweet it to their fans, giving you exposure to an entirely new market! I try to do this often, giving a ?shout out? to clients, people and businesses I love.

Tweet Formula #3: Share useful tips & content

In addition to sharing your promotions and content, share tips, articles, and resources you think would interest your online audience. I love tweeting inspirational quotes that get me (and my community) fired up for success.

Don?t be afraid to share other resources with your community. It helps position you as an expert in your field, especially if you add your own commentary. Just make sure you always credit or link to the original source.

Tweet Formula #4: Start a Twitter chat

Most chats happen weekly or monthly at a regular time with a predetermined topic and typically last about an hour. It?s a great way to make new contacts and attract a specific type of audience that?s interested in your topic. Do some Q&A or have a particular theme.

You can start a chat on a site like TweetChat.com. You just need to choose a descriptive hashtag so participants can follow along, and promote your chat at least a few weeks in advance. If hosting a monthly or weekly Twitter chat is a bigger commitment than you want to take on, find an industry-related chat and pop in as a special guest expert.

Tweet Formula #5: Respond to @ mentions

How you respond to your customers online can be very telling about your business?s customer service philosophy. That?s why it?s so important to be responsive to your customers and clients? tweets, especially if they mention you. For positive or neutral tweets, feel free to respond and/or retweet as appropriate. If a client or customer tweets something negative, try to mitigate the situation by inquiring for more information, or by deferring the complaint offline to your customer service department. But always post a public response so others see you take care of your customers! For example: ?Thanks for letting us know.? Susie from our service dept. will be in touch today.?

Question: Have you tried any of the above Tweet formulas? What?s worked best for YOU? Leave a comment below and tell us your favorite Twitter strategies.

(AP) ? A popular fifth-grade teacher fatally shot a masked, knife-wielding prowler outside his house during what appeared to be a late-night burglary attempt, only to discover he had killed his 15-year-old son, police say.

"It's something out of a Hollywood script," said John Hodge, the first selectman, or top elected official, in the town of about 14,000 people. He said he couldn't recall another killing in his eight years on the job.

No immediate charges were brought against the father, Jeffrey Giuliano, in the shooting of his son, Tyler, around 1 a.m. Thursday. Police said they were investigating whether the father's handgun was registered.

State police said Jeffrey Giuliano got a call from his sister next door saying that someone might be trying to break into her home. Giuliano grabbed a gun and went outside to investigate, troopers said.

He confronted someone in a black ski mask and black clothing and opened fire when the person came at him with a knife, police said.

When officers arrived, the teen was lying in the driveway of his aunt's home with gunshot wounds and the father was sitting on the grass. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene. A state trooper pulled back the ski mask to reveal that the victim was Tyler Giuliano. It was unclear if his father had already realized it by then.

Police said the youngster's intentions were unclear and they were investigating whether he was actually trying to burglarize the house or if it was some type of prank gone wrong.

"All in all it's a tragedy," said State Police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance said.

Jeffrey Giuliano did not return a message seeking comment.

Alicia Roy, superintendent of schools in New Fairfield, said the elder Giuliano grew up in the town, holds summer music and zoology camps for his students and plays in a rock band that raises a lot of money for charity.

"''He wanted to teach in the community he grew up," she said. "He connects with the students. He's a caring person. Very interactive class."

Tyler Giuliano was a student at New Fairfield High School. He was described as an easygoing teenager who enjoyed spending time with his family and flying gliders and small planes out of the Danbury airport. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol.

Casinos Spend $26.7 Million on Both Sides of Gaming Referendum ...

By RACHAEL PACELLA
Capital News Service

ANNAPOLIS - The debate over expanding gaming in Maryland will ultimately be decided by the people, but to help them pick, casino companies on both sides have now contributed more than $26.7 million to campaigns for and against Question 7.

Question 7, the gaming referendum, would expand gambling in Maryland by extending casino hours, adding tables games and allowing an additional casino to be built at National Harbor in Prince George's County. The gaming referendum fight has been prominently featured in television ads.

A total of $14.1 million has been contributed to the pro-expansion committee For Maryland Jobs and Schools Inc., most coming from MGM Resorts International, the potential operator of a casino at National Harbor.

A casino at National Harbor could take business away from surrounding casinos, including those owned by Penn National Gaming Inc. So far Penn National has spent has spent $13 million to campaign against expansion.

Penn National owns the Hollywood Casino Perryville in Maryland, but gaming analyst James Karmel said the company is really concerned about the effect gaming expansion in Maryland could have on its Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races in West Virginia 80 miles away.

"The millions they spend on ads could potentially be offset if they win," Karmel said.

The most recent campaign finance statement from the pro-expansion committee For Maryland Jobs and Schools Inc., released Wednesday, shows MGM has contributed an additional $3 million since a report issued last week. That puts MGM's total contributions to the pro-gaming expansion campaign since August at $11.4 million.

Some of MGM's contributions were in-kind, meaning they provided services and then reported the monetary value of those services as contributions.

For Maryland Jobs and Schools Inc. has also received $2.3 million from CBAC Gaming LLC, a group led by Caesars and Rock Gaming that was granted a license to operate video lottery terminals at a location in Baltimore this summer. Peterson Development Companies, the developers of National Harbor, have also contributed $400,000. They've spent $13.6 million.

Penn National has contributed $13 million to the committee against expansion, Get the Facts-Vote No on 7. They've spent $10.9 million.

Through its own committee Penn National Gaming Inc. has spent $36,401.

Jared DeMarinis , the director of Candidacy and Campaign Finance for the Maryland State Board of Elections, said both committees have been consistent and accurate in reporting their expenditures. He said they are required to report everything in Maryland.

He said a more detailed report will come out Oct. 12, showing how the money has been spent.

Some observers have noted the irony in seeing casinos spend money on both sides of a gambling debate.

"There's a touch of hypocrisy quite often in the kind of marketing that's been done," said Bill Eadington, director of the Institute for the Study of Gambling and Commercial Gaming at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Right now opinion on the issue is tied, according to a poll of registered voters released Wednesday by Gonzales Research & Marketing Strategies, Inc. The poll shows opponents of gaming expansion leading by only 1 percentage point.

Todd Phillips Will Trust Your Eyes

trust-your-eyes-todd-phillips

The Hangover director Todd Phillips is getting serious about branching out.? After primarily helming comedies for most of his career, Phillips recently attached himself to a remake of the crime drama The Gambler.? Now Variety reports that Phillips is set to direct and produce an adaptation of Linwood Barclay?s thriller novel Trust Your Eyes?for Warner Bros., with Dan Lin?also onboard as a producer.? In the vein of Rear Window, the story centers on a map-obsessed schizophrenic who witnesses a murder in New York City via a GoogleMaps-like program on his computer and tries to convince his older brother to investigate.? The two cross paths with a politically-connected ex-cop and soon realize that they?ve stumbled onto a deadly conspiracy.

Due Date had a few nice dramatic scenes, but we?ve never really seen Phillips tackle the thriller genre before.? The story sounds like a promising cross between Rear Window and David Fincher?s?The Game, and I?m eager to see Phillips? take on the material.? The director is currently in the middle of production on The Hangover Part III.? Hit the jump to read a synopsis for Trust Your Eyes.

trust-your-eyes-book-coverHere?s a synopsis for Trust Your Eyes:

Thomas Kilbride is a map-obsessed schizophrenic so affected that he rarely leaves the self-imposed bastion of his bedroom. But with a computer program called Whirl360.com, he travels the world while never so much as stepping out the door. He pores over and memorizes the streets of the world. He examines every address, as well as the people who are frozen in time on his computer screen.

Then he sees something that anyone else might have stumbled upon?but has not?in a street view of downtown New York City: an image in a window. An image that looks like a woman being murdered.

Thomas?s brother, Ray, takes care of him, cooking for him, dealing with the outside world on his behalf, and listening to his intricate and increasingly paranoid theories. When Thomas tells Ray what he has seen, Ray humors him with a half-hearted investigation. But Ray soon realizes he and his brother have stumbled onto a deadly conspiracy.

Drought-hit hog producers face tough choice: struggle or fold

CHICAGO (Reuters) - With the worst drought in half a century driving feed prices sky high, pork producers are facing an untenable choice: drain their savings and gamble on a better future, or sell off their herd and get out of the business altogether.

A disappointing corn harvest has forced the slaughter of sows - adult female hogs that are the building blocks of a herd - at record rates, swelling pork supplies and sending prices plunging.

As a result, consumers could be treated to cheap pork this fall but would have to dig deeper into their wallets next year as prices rise for products from bacon to pork chops to hams.

A clearer picture of how severely the drought impacted hog producers is expected to emerge on Friday, when the U.S. Department of Agriculture releases its quarterly report on the number of hogs and pigs on farms as of September 1.

So far, the signs are grim. A whopping 9.9 million head of hogs were rushed to market in August, the most ever for that month, according to data analyzed by Reuters.

Many small producers grow much of their own grain and are worried that any disruptions in federal crop insurance payouts - sorely needed if they suffered crop losses due to the drought - could squeeze their ability to survive through the current downturn.

Larger producers are scouring the Midwest to snap up whatever feed they can find, or are sinking tens of millions of dollars into importing corn from Brazil. Many fear that, by this winter, there will not be enough feed on hand to meet the demands of the entire livestock industry.

John Prestage, whose family owns and operates the North Carolina-based Prestage Farms which ranks among the top five U.S. hog producers, opted for a simpler cost-saving solution: Send skinnier pigs to the processor.

The industry is "in a very modest contraction. It's very seriously not in growth mode," Prestage said.

HUNT FOR FEED

Big or small, many producers are aggressively hunting for feed.

In June, Illinois farmer Phil Borgic began buying corn from growers in his area and selling off some of his animals. It netted him a profit, he said, in part because the local cash corn market's basis value - price as measured against futures at the Chicago Board of Trade - was normal at about 15 cents per bushel below December corn futures.

But as the local corn fields withered the basis value jumped to 40-60 cents higher than normal, Borgic said. Now, he is looking to top corn state Iowa for supplies to feed his 80,000 pigs.

"We have to make sure we have it in the bin - corn in the bin," said Borgic, who has a year's supply of corn in storage and is still looking for more.

FEED COSTS HURT SMITHFIELD

The drought's ripple effects are being felt far and wide. Earlier this month, Smithfield Foods Inc, the largest U.S. pork and hog producer, reported a quarterly profit that fell short of analysts' estimates due to high feed costs.

The company's fresh pork operating margin was down 1 percent for the first quarter that ended July 29, after being up 3 percent the year before.

Tyson Foods Inc said it expects lower-than-projected fiscal earnings for 2012 in its beef and pork sectors as the industry copes with "very difficult market conditions."

However, "we still anticipate solid earnings for the year, and we are performing well during challenging circumstances," said Donnie Smith, Tyson president and chief executive officer, when the company reported earnings on August 6.

The hog industry has gone from being in a state of expansion to current conditions in a matter of three months - the time it took for grain prices to hit record highs due to the drought.

The significant liquidation of animals will likely delay the industry's ability to quickly bounce back.

It takes about nine to 10 months to produce a hog for slaughter, from conception to full maturity, said Bob Brown, an independent market analyst in Edmond, Oklahoma.

The recent trend of farmers racing to the slaughterhouse, in part to avoid the typical seasonal downturn in prices in the winter, continued this month. Weekly hog slaughter in early September hit the highest rate in 4-1/2 years, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

USDA estimated total U.S. pork production for the week ending September 22 at 485.6 million lbs, up 4.5 pct from a year earlier and up 2.4 pct year to date.

The earliest signs of liquidation will be seen in the Kept for Breeding inventory of this Friday's government report, with larger numbers of sows and boars being slaughtered during the June-August quarter and fewer replacement gilts being retained.

CANADA HIT HARD TOO

The economic pain caused by the drought is particularly acute in Canada, the world's largest live hog exporter. Earlier this month, two of Canada's largest hog-producing operations, Big Sky Farms and Puratone, entered receivership and creditor protection, respectively.

Canada's shipments are projected by the USDA at an estimated 5.8 million head in 2012, about the same as last year but down from over 10 million head exported in 2007.

Doug Martin, the third generation of a 75-year-old family farm near Selkirk, Manitoba, is reluctantly closing his barns and selling off every one of his 1,200 sows and weanlings.

The liquidation is costing him about $44 for every 40-lb pig he sells at current feed and hog prices, but it allows him to avoid worse losses in the coming months.

The family grain business, which is cashing in on the same high crop prices which is killing his hog operation, will support the family until next summer, when Martin said he will consider getting back into the hog business.

"I'll lose money doing this, but I'll lose less money by getting out," said Martin, 55.

PORK PRICES SET TO BITE

American consumers are expected to enjoy temporarily tasty deals on chops, tenderloins and other pork products this fall at the grocery store, say retail and agricultural analysts.

But they caution that the nation's shrinking herd will mean a shortage of pork products next year is all but unavoidable.

It is not just bacon that could be scarce. By 2013, they warn, supplies of beef and chicken will also be tight, as the entire U.S. livestock sector wrestles with slimming down its herds amid the economic strain of record-high feed costs.

"The whole protein curve will be going up," said Bob Summers, a retail analyst at Susquehanna Financial Group.

That, in turn, has placed further strain on grocery retailers who are loath to adjust meat prices too much - even though they are faced with their own financial pressures, Summers said.

"Any time you start to get price increases that are above 3 percent, you start to see demand destruction," Summers said.
