Are phones the new gaming console?

Dec 21

Smartphones have transformed from PDA devices used by business executives to a multimedia device primarily used for entertainment. Smartphones such as Blackberry and Windows Mobile provided E-mail service with sync capabilities to enterprise servers. It allowed executives to stay connected to their work network. Today, smartphones have almost nothing to do with E-mail, enterprise or even compatibility with enterprise systems. A smartphone is criticized if Angry Birds does not run on its platform or it does not have enough ?apps?. Not many people review the different types of VPN protocols supported by the platform. The main consumers of smartphones have drifted from business to teenagers. The heart of the platforms has become social media. Facebook and Twitter have become core OS features which are built into the platforms. This has even drifted to Apple?s Mac OS X Mountain Lion and Microsoft?s Windows 8 systems, which have Facebook integration built-in across the system.

Gaming was primarily done on PCs, as in computers or desktops. It then moved towards consoles. Still, a big chunk of the gaming market is driven by consoles. But mobile is catching up. The advantage that mobile gaming has, is that its mobile. When you are at a doctor?s clinic waiting to be called, or waiting for someone to arrive at the coffee shop, or traveling. This advantage along with powerful and affordable hardware is driving mobile gaming. When app marketplaces were launched as a central place to find software, they included games. Eventually, the gaming category boomed and now the marketplaces have separate sections for ?Apps? and ?Games?. The games section then further breaks down into different types of games.
I believe that mobile gaming was surging as it was mobile. This included casual games like crosswords, sudoku and other puzzles that are usually played in spare time. Rovio?s Angry Birds created a fusion between casual gaming and arcade style games. One of the reasons for it being popular is that anyone can play it. While racing games and shooting games are primarily for gamers, Angry Birds adds the casual audience. This gave it a massive target audience to begin with. Angry Birds highlights the gaming aspect of mobile phones. Now, we have other categories of games beginning to become popular. This includes racing, shooting, puzzle, online casino games and a plethora of other categories.
This leaves us with one question. Are smartphones going to be phones, or will they become an online social media and gaming device?

Bernard Madoff's brother gets 10-year sentence

FILE - In this June 29, 2012 file photo, Peter Madoff leaves Federal Court in New York after pleading guilty to criminal charges. The suspense surrounding the sentencing of the brother of Ponzi king Bernard Madoff will largely be absent because a plea agreement makes a 10-year prison term all but certain. Much of the suspense for the sentencing in New York of the brother of Ponzi king Bernard Madoff has been eliminated with a plea agreement that makes a 10-year prison term all but certain. But the proceeding Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012 in Manhattan federal court for Peter Madoff will not lack drama. (AP Photo/John Minchillo, File)

(AP) ? The brother of imprisoned financier Bernard Madoff was sentenced Thursday to 10 years in prison for crimes committed in the shadow of his notorious sibling by a judge who said she disbelieved his claims that he did not know about the epic fraud.

Peter Madoff, 67, had agreed when he pleaded guilty in June to serve the maximum sentence allowable to the charges of conspiracy and falsifying the books and records of an investment adviser. He follows to prison his 74-year-old brother, who is serving a 150-year sentence after admitting he created a fraud so large decades ago that thousands of people lost $20 billion.

U.S. District Judge Laura Taylor Swain urged Peter Madoff to tell the truth even now.

The judge said Peter Madoff, wearing a well-tailored charcoal suit, was "frankly not believable" when he claimed at his plea that he only learned of the fraud when his brother revealed it to him just before he surrendered to authorities.

Peter Madoff spoke briefly Thursday and less emotionally than in June, saying: "I am deeply ashamed of my conduct and have tried to atone by pleading guilty and have agreed to forfeit all of my present and future assets."

He added: "I am profoundly sorry that my failures let many people down, including my loved ones."

Two investors, among 40 who wrote victim impact statements, spoke during the proceeding, each describing the financial ruins of their extended family.

Investor Michael T. De Vita, 62, also called for truth, saying he believed "it to be physically impossible for a single person to carry out such a gargantuan task all by himself."

De Vita said investors "have waited four years for others to accept responsibility for this massive crime. We are still waiting for that today."

"All of this was preventable if only one person was willing to do the right thing and stop this in its tracks years ago. Peter Madoff could have been that person," he said.

Amy Luria Nissenbaum, 49, choking up at times, also complained that Peter Madoff had chosen even after his plea to "turn a blind eye," saying her home was in foreclosure and some days she struggles to "clothe and feed my children."

Nissenbaum said Peter Madoff was part of his brother's fraud for more than 30 years and he should serve the same amount of time in prison.

When Swain announced that Peter Madoff will not have to report to prison until Feb. 6, Nissenbaum laughed out loud bitterly. The delay in reporting to prison will let Peter Madoff attend his granddaughter's Bat Mitzvah on Jan. 19. He got into a BMW after he left the courthouse.

The judge noted that 10 years was the maximum sentence allowed by the charges to which Madoff had pled and repeatedly urged Madoff to relieve the pain of investors by revealing more about the Madoff business.

"I challenge you to be honest about all that you have done and all that you have seen. In other words, all that you know," she said.

The magnitude of the damage done by the Madoffs cannot be underestimated, she said.

"Trust in financial institutions, thousands of individual lives and numerous charitable organizations have been blown apart," she said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Lisa Baroni said it would have been easy for Peter Madoff to blow the whistle if he had even minimally carried out his duties. Instead, she said, he even teamed up with his brother to distribute the remaining $300 million in the company's accounts to family, friends and favored clients before the FBI put an end to that scheme by arresting his brother.

The sentencing comes four years and a week after Bernard Madoff first revealed the fraud, which occurred as the former NASDAQ chairman built a reputation for delivering unparalleled investment results, even in bad times. The revelation came only days after the business sent out statements that made investors think their investments had grown to a total of more than $65 billion.

Peter Madoff said at his plea that he had no idea his brother was running a massive Ponzi scheme, paying off longtime investors at times with money from newer investors.

"My family was torn apart as a result of my brother's atrocious conduct," he said. "I was reviled by strangers as well as friends who assumed that I knew about the Ponzi scheme."

Peter Madoff, who joined his brother's firm after graduating from Fordham Law School in 1970, has been free on $5 million bail after he agreed to surrender all assets.

Prior to sentencing, his lawyer, John Wing, said in a memorandum that Peter Madoff will "almost certainly live out his remaining days as a jobless pariah, in or out of prison." He called him a victim of his loyalty to his brother, saying he had been mistreated by the sibling who was eight years older and was viewed as "the prince" by his mother.

As part of a forfeiture agreement, Madoff's wife, Marion, and daughter Shana must forfeit nearly all of their assets. The government said those assets and assets that will be forfeited by other family members include several homes, a Ferrari and more than $10 million in cash and securities. It said his wife will be left with $771,733. Besides the Madoff brothers, no other family members have been arrested.

Though Madoff had been the firm's chief compliance officer for nearly four decades, the government marked his start in the conspiracy as 1996, when he created false and misleading compliance documents and false reports for the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Since the fraud was revealed, a court-appointed trustee has reached agreements to recover approximately $9.3 billion and is hoping to recover another $3 billion over the next 18 months. About $3 billion has been approved for redistribution to victims through an ongoing claims process.

Besides his brother, Peter Madoff is among six who have pleaded guilty in the case, including the former finance chief, a payroll manager, an accountant, a comptroller and a securities trader.

Five others face trial next year, including Bernard Madoff's longtime secretary. All have pleaded not guilty.

Mongolia: Property ? bubble or boom? | Ubpost News

By Paulius Kuncinas
Regional Editor,?Oxford Business Group

Confidence that Mongolia?s resource wealth will generate unprecedented expansion in its real estate market has seen prices rise and many of Ulaanbaatar?s prime properties snapped up. However, the experience of other countries that have had similar resource-related property growth suggests it may not last forever.
In September, Export Development Canada, the state-owned export credit agency, warned that due to bank credits rising in excess of 50% year-on-year in 2012, a real estate ?bubble? had appeared in the capital, which is likely to have a negative impact on the banking sector. Meanwhile, in October the central bank said the national growth rate in 2012 will slow by up to one-third from the record 17% achieved in 2011, due to a decrease in foreign direct investment (FDI) and reduced demand from China.
Talk of slowing growth and a property bubble clashes with the estimations of real estate agencies, which are predicting that, as copper and coking coal mines come online, the real estate market will see ?exponential? growth.
?We expect [our] diversified portfolio of high-quality retail, office and redevelopment property in downtown Ulaanbaatar to compound at 30-50% per year going forward, undergirded by a combination of rapidly rising rental yields and compressing capitalisation rates,? wrote Mongolia Growth Group, a real estate and financial services conglomerate, in an October press statement.
However, the rapid growth scenario for a country of just 3m people, which issued its first mortgage only in 2003, poses a number of issues for investors, including the crumbling state of much of the country?s infrastructure.
Citing further problems, in August the Mongolia Real Estate Blog wrote, ?The volatility of housing prices and the potential for a boom-bust is higher if the housing supply is severely constrained by land access and urban regulation problems, which is an issue, considering the short supply of land in Ulaanbaatar?.

A number of players in the industry, who are concerned about the prospects of a real estate bubble in the capital, have pointed to similar circumstances in Kazakhstan in 2008. ?Driven by an influx of oil-related FDI and easily accessible mortgages, land prices in downtown Almaty, Kazakhstan?s largest city, surged a whopping 8000% between 2002 and 2008, while the cost per metre of apartments in the downtown area rose 833% in the same period?, noted local news website Mongoliana in July. With the onset of the global financial crisis, the property bubble burst and prices dropped 40% from their peak, and currently are half of what they were in 2007.
However, industry insiders say there is inherently less risk in the Mongolian market. ?Despite rising prices, the market in Mongolia remains majority cash-based, so borrowing is not yet a significant risk factor,? said Christopher De Gruben, the CEO of Real Estate Mongolia, in January.
Another important factor to the country?s growth is its emerging middle class. Per-capita GDP in Mongolia more than tripled to $2200 in 2010 from $638 in 2004, and is set to rise further this year, as the government increases all government salaries and pensions by 43%. There are now around 4000 apartments in Ulaanbaatar available to nationals with middle incomes, who will be able to easily access mortgages, according to Frontier Securities, a local investment firm.
According to Mongoliana, the key to avoiding the bubble is enabling growth by lowering lending standards and ?encouraging new homeownership, while also managing risk across the mining and financial sectors in the long term?.
In terms of encouraging home ownership among citizens, the government is taking a number of steps, with T. Bayarsaikhan, the minister of construction and urban development, stating in October that a 6% interest loan, implemented by the government for first-time buyers in February, will be extended to all Mongolian citizens. He also said that future buildings will be geared toward low heat-loss parameters and energy efficiency, while further noting that planned future construction will have higher standards and better health and safety measures.
However, in the same month, the central bank officially stopped accepting applications for the loans, part of the government?s ?100,000 Homes Project?, stating that it needed to acquire the necessary financing to resume the loans from the Trade and Development Bank of Mongolia.
While Mongolia?s rapid growth story indeed raises the spectre of it repeating mistakes made by other resource-wealthy countries in the past, it has the opportunity to learn from their experiences.

New compound reverses fatty liver disease

Dec. 19, 2012 ? Scientists from the Florida campus of The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) have developed the first synthetic compound that can reverse the effects of a serious metabolic condition known as fatty liver disease. True to its name, the disease involves an abnormal buildup of fat in the liver.

The compound -- known as SR9238 -- is the first to effectively suppress lipid or fat production in the liver, eliminating inflammation and reversing fat accumulation in animal models of fatty liver disease. The new compound also significantly lowered total cholesterol levels, although precisely how that occurred remains something of a mystery.

"We've been working on a pair of natural proteins called LXR? and LXR? that stimulate fat production in the liver, and we thought our compound might be able to successfully suppress this process," said Thomas Burris, a professor at TSRI who led the study, which was recently published in an online edition of the journal ACS Chemical Biology. "Once the animals were put on the drug, we were able to reverse the disease after a single month with no adverse side effects -- while they ate a high-fat diet."

Fatty liver, which often accompanies obesity and type 2 diabetes, frequently leads to more serious conditions including cirrhosis and liver cancer. The condition affects some 10 to 24 percent of the general population, according to a 2003 study in GUT, an international journal of gastroenterology and hepatology.

Burris and his colleagues designed SR9238 so that it would be quickly metabolized in the liver to minimize migration of the drug into the bloodstream, which could lead to side effects.

In the study, mice were fed a high-fat diet for 14 weeks prior to treatment with SR9238. After one month of treatment, the scientists found that the liver's fat-producing genes were repressed and fat expression in the liver was reduced up to 90 percent.

In addition, the scientists observed an 80 percent reduction of the enzyme responsible for producing cholesterol (3-Hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A Reductase) -- the same enzyme targeted by statins.

Markers for liver damage were down as well, which suggests the compound may also have the potential to treat alcohol-related fatty liver damage.

The City of Brotherly Love hosted an action-packed episode of WWE Main Event featuring Team Hell No defending the WWE Tag Team Titles against Team Rhodes Scholars in a rematch from last month. Also, The Prime Time Players continued their quest for tag team dominance and faced Zack Ryder & Santino Marella.

WWE Tag Team Champions Team Hell No def. Team Rhodes Scholars (PHOTOS | WATCH)

Last month on WWE Main Event, Team Rhodes Scholars battled Team Hell No in a fast-paced battle that saw Cody Rhodes suffer a concussion and shoulder injury. Following a full recovery and sporting a new ?stache, Rhodes rejoined his tag team partner Damien Sandow and sought revenge by once again challenging Team Hell No for the WWE Tag Team Championships on WWE Main Event. Despite the injury and absence from active competition, the rivalry between Team Hell No and Team Rhodes Scholars has continued to brew ? Sandow and Rhodes believing they are indeed much more civilized than the combustible WWE Tag Team Champions.

Nevertheless, the only way to prove which team is supreme is inside the squared circle and the WWE Universe in Philly was treated to the high stakes rematch between the duos. As the match got underway, it was abundantly clear there was more than just animosity between the respective teams competing on ION Television. Rhodes was set to start the match against Daniel Bryan, but the son of WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes demanded Kane be tagged in to begin the contest.

Kane and Rhodes exchanged blows, but The Big Red Monster maintained the edge over his opponent ? revenge no doubt clouding Rhodes? strategy ? ultimately forcing him to tag in Sandow. Team Hell No maintained clear momentum over the challengers, however, and the WWE Universe?s support was strong for the champions, chanting ?Yes!? whenever Bryan would scream ?No!?
Teamwork was the key to Team Hell No?s domination throughout much of the contest. Though Sandow took the brunt of the punishment, he managed to tag in Rhodes but Kane maintained the advantage. With their outlook grim for capturing the Tag Team Titles, Team Rhodes Scholars adjusted their strategy. Rhodes feigned an injury, allowing Sandow to distract The Big Red Monster as Rhodes threw him into the steel steps.

The nefarious tactics proved to be effective as Sandow and Rhodes displayed teamwork of their own, keeping Kane reeling and ? more importantly ? away from tagging in Bryan. Avoiding an all-out slugfest with The Big Red Monster, Team Rhodes Scholars made sure to tag in and out frequently, not allowing Kane to adjust his bearings with respect to who he faced inside the ring. But the experience and the resilience of the former WWE and World Heavyweight Champion enabled him to make the tag, resulting in Bryan regaining momentum for the champions.

Momentum shifted back and forth, both duos continued to display teamwork in an effort to prove why the championships belong on their waists. Though Team Rhodes Scholars nearly accomplished their goal, Team Hell No continued to fight. As Rhodes and Kane battled once again in the center of the ring, the second-generation Superstar missed a moonsault, giving his rival an opening to deliver a devastating Chokeslam. The maneuver was followed by Bryan?s flying headbutt, allowing Team Hell No to pick up the victory and retain the WWE Tag Team Championships.

The Guilt Trip Movie Review

Kidzworld goes on the road with Seth and Barbra for a ?Guilt Trip? movie review!

By: Lynn Barker

If you hit the road for eight days with your mom, would it be all fun and games or full of annoying ?mom-lessons?? We?re checking out the funny and sweet new Seth Rogen/Barbra Streisand movie, The Guilt Trip.

Visiting Mom

After years of boring work for the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), chemist/inventor Andy Brewster (Seth Rogen) creates his own green cleaning product and schedules a road trip to pitch the idea to big stores and shopping networks. A short visit to his mom?s place leaves him feeling a bit sorry for her lonely life so? he asks her along. She?s thrilled.

Mom?s Past

Before mom and son leave on the trip, Andy learns that his mom doesn?t date because she might still have feelings for an old love; the guy that got away. He encourages her to do some senior dating but it doesn?t work,. They hit the road with Andy having secretly found mom?s old boyfriend in San Francisco and hoping to reunite them.

On the Road

Mom pops a lurid romance novel ?book on tape? into the car?s system and Andy has to listen for miles?.and miles. Andy pitches his product but mom realizes he?s being too scientific. He needs to simplify his pitch. He ignores her. When mom butts in on one of his pitches, he?s furious so she gets drunk for the first time in a hotel bar. Later, in Texas, she enters a steak-eating contest and finishes a huge meal. Andy is both impressed and grossed out. Mom also meets a cool cowboy guy her age who would like to hook up with her.

In Vegas

Mom gambles and watches Andy do another boring pitch, this time to HSN (Home Shopping Network) but he finally gets it, loosens up and takes mom?s advice. He makes his product fun and the HSN folks love it.?

In San Francisco

Mom is upset when she learns that Andy planned to get her together with the old boyfriend but they end up at the man?s house for a sad and not-as-planned reunion. It does give mom some closure and she thanks her son for it.

At the Airport

Ready to take two separate planes home, mom and son are happy and happy with each other. Andy is afraid she will call him on his cell as usual before he even gets out of the airport but mom has other plans now. She calls the cute cowboy she met in Texas!

Wrapping Up

You might think that a mom/son comedy pairing popular Seth Rogen (Superbad, Kung Fu Panda movies,?Monsters Vs. Aliens, The Green Hornet, Knocked Up) with diva, singer/actress/director Barbra Streisand (too many credits to mention) might be just, well?.weird but it?s so not! These two have great comic timing and chemistry together. You can really believe they are mom and son in this funny but also touching and family-friendly movie. (Seth doesn?t curse and doesn?t even use his trademark silly laugh much).

If your mom has ever embarrassed you (and whose mom hasn?t?), you can get into this film. Maybe your mom or dad might think the son/mom humor is clich?, been-there-done-that but Seth?s corny charm and Barbra?s loving but overbearing mom routine will mostly give you some laughs and entertain and, in serious moments, the duo can touch your heart. Not a perfect film but certainly worth a lighthearted trip to the Cineplex with pals or family.

Since we don?t have a ? star to go 3 ?, we?ll go 4 stars on this mostly enjoyable film.
