Idi Amin vice president dies at 91

Adrisi, a general who served as vice president from 1977 to 1978 during Amin?s eight-year rule, died in Uganda?s main government hospital in Kampala, the Voice of Africa-Uganda radio reported.

The 91-year-old was admitted to the hospital two weeks ago with hypertension, diabetes and a fracture in his right leg, the state-owned newpaper New Vision said. No cause of death had been

No evidence of ?threats? that prompted The Animals? Eric Burdon to cancel Israel gig

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Eric Burdon, former lead vocalist of the 1960s British band The Animals, has canceled a scheduled performance in Israel amid claims of ?threats? to his life.

But no evidence has emerged to substantiate the claims of threats, or accusations by a Jewish Agency propagandist that activists in the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement made them.

Claim of ?threats?

?We are under increasing pressure, including many threatening emails that we are receiving on a daily basis. I wouldn?t want to put Eric in any danger,? his manager, Marianna Burdon, wrote in a letter to Israeli members of Tislam, the band Burdon was scheduled to perform with, Haaretz reported on 23 July.

Burdon is currently on tour promoting his recent solo album Til Your River Runs Dry. The Animals? best-known songs include hit singles ?The House of the Rising Sun,? ?Don?t Let Me Be Misunderstood? and ?We Gotta Get out of This Place.?

Burdon?s song ?Monterey? (see video above) is an ode to the legendary 1967 music festival in Monterey, California, which is remembered for some of the earliest major American appearances by iconic artists of the era, including Hugh Masekela, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Who and Ravi Shankar.

While other Israeli media, such as The Times of Israel website, have also reported that Burdon ?caved to threats,? no details of the alleged threats have come to light.

The Independent reported, ?The nature of the threats is unclear, but according to Israel Radio ? Mr Burdon was not willing to risk his life to come to Israel.?

According to the blog Kadaitcha, Burdon?s cancelation came after an advocacy campaign by activists, including the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign and Don?t Play Apartheid Israel.

No information from Burdon?s camp

The Electronic Intifada reached Elizabeth Freund, Burdon?s New York based press agent, by telephone this morning to ask about the nature of the threats and whether they had been reported to any law enforcement agency.

Freund told The Electronic Intifada she had no information and referred further inquiries to Burdon?s ?management.? Freund said that she would forward The Electronic Intifada?s emailed inquiry to Burdon?s manager.

Two additional emails sent to Marianna Burdon, at an address posted on Eric Burdon?s official website, have received no response.

Jewish Agency operative?s accusations against ?BDS? activists

As Kadaitcha noted, Israeli propagandists have been quick to seize on the story.

In a series of tweets Avi Mayer, a propaganda operative for the Jewish Agency, directly accused BDS activists of making the threats.

The Jewish Agency is an Israeli-government sponsored organization that implements discriminatory policies to promote Zionist colonization of Palestinian land.

One of Mayer?s tweets stated: ?#BDS thugs threaten 72-year-old. // @EricBurdon of The Animals cancels concert in Israel, citing threats? and links to the Haaretz story which does not support his claim.

Mayer repeated the accusations in other tweets:

But Mayer offered absolutely no evidence to back up his claims that anyone associated with the BDS movement or any known Palestine solidarity organization had anything to do with the alleged threats.

Israel has an interest in representing the BDS movement as working by threats, as more and more artists take principled stances and voluntarily heed Palestinians? call to refuse to perform in Israel.

Just last week, for example, acclaimed Indian-American director Mira Nair joined a growing list of cultural figures that includes Roger Waters and Alice Walker, endorsing the cultural boycott of Israel.

Nair explained that she would not travel to the country until ?apartheid? had ended.

Boycott activists respond

USACBI, the US campaign for the cultural and academic of Israel, has forcefully rejected any suggestion that it uses threats in its work:

The Organizing Collective of the US Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel celebrates the increasing number of international artists who are cancelling performances in Israel. Accompanying this success are allegations that artists receive threats that lead them to cancel their performances. To counter these charges, USACBI wants to be clear about the work we do, and how we do it.

The statement adds that, along with its allies, including PACBI, USACBI ?contacts artists scheduled to perform in Israel. We actively appeal to these artists and inform them about the Palestinian call for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel.?We make sure these artists know that boycotts and divestment initiatives are non-violent strategies of global solidarity.?

?Although we and our allies urge artists not to cross the international picket line by performing in Israel, and although we make sustained efforts to educate performers about the reason for boycott,?we have not and never will issue any threats against anyone who does not heed the boycott call,? the statement adds.

USACBI called the reports of threats against Burdon ?vague and unsubstantiated? and added: ?We do not know if they are made up by media hostile to the BDS strategy, or by artists and/or their agents, or if they are inflated reports of remarks made by individuals who do not represent the movement.?

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.?Casting House Republicans as stubborn deadbeats, President Barack Obama sought Thursday to discredit House Republicans in upcoming fiscal fights by painting them as roadblocks to a thriving middle class.

With Obama and Congress approaching all-too-familiar showdowns over spending levels and the nation's borrowing limit, Obama used a visit to a seaside port in Florida to argue that the nation's economic agenda should be immune to the partisan backbiting he faulted Republicans for instigating.

"Shutting down the government just because I'm for keeping it open?that's not an economic plan," Obama said, wiping sweat from his face in a muggy port warehouse. "Threatening that you won't pay the bills in this country, when we've already racked up those bills, that's not an economic plan?that's just being a deadbeat."

In the last of three stops on a two-day tour to reframe his broad economic vision for the nation, Obama pitched the need for enhanced American infrastructure at this port and others across the country?and for better roads, bridges and power grids. But while he touted his efforts to streamline permitting, the president offered no new proposals for how Americans and their leaders could accelerate a lethargic economic recovery.

Obama warned that if Republicans continue with their "my way or the highway attitude," dire consequences could await for Americans. He encouraged voters to use next month's congressional recess to tell Republicans who'll be in their home districts that gridlock is unacceptable. "It could plunge us back into financial crisis," the president said.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., questioned the point of Obama's big push in a speech on the Senate floor Thursday. "At some point, campaign season has to end and the working-with-others season has to begin," McConnell said. "At some point, you have to stop promising an 'ocean of tomorrows' and start actually working with the representatives of the people."

Obama praised Senate Republicans for being willing to compromise on issues like immigration, then drew a distinction with House Republicans, whom he repeatedly accused of bringing the economy to the brink. But Obama, too, at times has taken an uncompromising approach with ultimatums that force his opponents to give in or no deal. He's refused to consider any budget that includes the across-the-board, automatic spending cuts known as the sequester that went into effect in March.

The 2011 battle between Obama and House Republicans over raising the government's borrowing limit brought the nation close to default and resulted in a hard-fought budget deal. Obama says he won't be bullied on the debt ceiling again, but many in Washington believe the need to increase the borrowing cap later this year will prompt some kind of budget bargain.

A new poll by the Pew Research Center shows that pessimism about the economy remains widespread. The poll conducted last week found that 82 percent of Americans think the economy is in fair or poor condition and 67 percent are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the U.S. today. Forty-four percent think it will be a long time before the nation's economy recovers, while only 28 percent say it's currently recovering. The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Even among Democrats, just 38 percent think the economy is recovering. But there are signs of slow improvement: The housing market is recovering, the stock market is booming, and unemployment is falling despite remaining uncomfortably high at 7.6 percent.

After a examining the port's giant cranes used to lift shipping containers onto ships, Obama spoke to a few hundred workers in the sweltering warehouse. He lamented that the U.S. was lagging behind China and Germany on fixing infrastructure and said that's why he's working to speed up the federal permitting process.

"The businesses of tomorrow are not going to locate near outdated roads and old ports," he said. Improvements to the port so more supertankers can come in would mean more workers spending more money at restaurants so that the waitress serving them, for example, can spend more money on an iPod, he said.

In making his plea for more spending on public works projects, the president is also relying on support from corporate leaders whose businesses either benefit from government financed construction or rely on up-to-date transportation systems to move their products. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has been pressing Congress for greater spending on infrastructure and has allied itself with the president's effort, but in a statement Wednesday, chamber President Thomas Donohue also put some distance with Obama by saying such a public works initiative must be tied to less regulation, lower taxes and less overall government spending.

"The president correctly underscored the importance of infrastructure, education and immigration to our economic future," Donohue said. "But in order to grow and create lasting private sector jobs, we must have more economic freedom and while reining in government spending, taxes and debt."

The visit also marked Obama's first to the state since the acquittal of George Zimmerman, the man charged in the death of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin. The case has generated a painful, nationwide debate about racial prejudice, but Obama didn't mention the case in his public remarks.

The broad economic themes Obama illustrated Thursday will be followed up in the coming weeks by another series of speeches drilling down on key sectors such as manufacturing, education, housing, retirement security and health care. Advisers say some of those speeches will contain more specific policy proposals, both for legislation and executive action Obama can take without congressional approval.

The first of those addresses was to come Tuesday, when Obama will travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., to promote American competitiveness at an Amazon fulfillment center, which packs and ships products to online purchasers. The White House said some new policy ideas will be unveiled during that visit.

LONDON (AP) ? His Royal Highness has a name.

Britain's new prince has been named George Alexander Louis, royal officials said Wednesday, ending speculation over what moniker Prince William and his wife, Kate, would pick for their first child.

Kensington Palace said royals are "delighted to announce" their son's name, adding that the 2-day-old baby and third-in-line to the throne will be known as "His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge."

Noble names are steeped in history, which explains why thousands of bets rolled in to British bookmakers for the name George, the name of six previous British kings. The moniker evokes the steadfastness of the queen's father, George VI, who rallied the nation during World War II.

Meaning farmer or earth worker, George was the 12th most popular name for boys born in England and Wales in 2011. St. George, a 4th-century Christian martyr, is the patron saint of England.

The name Louis could be a tribute to Lord Louis Mountbatten, the Duke of Edinburgh's uncle and the last British Viceroy of India before independence in 1947. William's father, Prince Charles, was close with Mountbatten, who was assassinated by the Irish Republican Army in 1979.

The announcement from Prince William and Kate ? just two days after the baby's birth ? was quick, by royal standards.

Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh took a month before settling on the name Charles for the Prince of Wales. Princess Diana and Prince Charles took a week before settling on William's four names.

For now, the littlest royal is expected to stay out of the spotlight after making his first "public appearance" in the arms of his parents outside of London's St. Mary's Hospital on Tuesday.

After leaving the hospital, William and Kate introduced their son Wednesday to great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, who was keen to see the baby before she starts her annual summer vacation in Scotland later this week.

Then the young family headed to see Kate's parents in their village near London.

Now that Kate and William have chosen a name, they are expected to soon choose a photographer for the baby's first official portrait.

Mechwarrior Online Offers 'Sarah's Jenner' for Cancer Charity

Mechwarrior Online is honoring a five-year-old player who died of brain cancer in May by selling a special mech, with the proceed going completely to charity. Earlier this year, five-year-old Sarah Marie Alida Parries of Vancouver (who was a big fan of MechWarrior and played the game with her dad Jon) died from complications with inoperable brain cancer.

After her passing, fans within the MWO community asked that special hero mech be created to honor her and to be sold for charity. Piranha Games listened to the community and created "Sarah's Jenner," which it unveiled today (pictured left). Now that mech is available for $10 which will go to the Canadian Cancer Society.

"Sarah's Jenner" will be available until August 10. The mech can't be purchased with C-Bills, cannot be resold, and comes bundled with its own exclusive mech bay for storage.

Canonical announces the Ubuntu Edge, complete with Indiegogo funding campaign

Canonical's dual-booting halo device will bring the specs every enthusiast has been asking for, provided it meets the $32 million funding goal

We just got off a call with Canonical, the folks behind the Ubuntu operating system, where we learned all about their latest project -- The Ubuntu Edge. The Edge will be an extremely high-spec'd convergence device, which dual-boots both Android and Ubuntu, and is ready to attach to a monitor and keyboard to make a full featured desktop replacement.

The Edge is being announced as an Indiegogo campaign, and Canonical is looking for a whopping $32 million. Mark Shuttleworth, Canonical founder, spent a while talking about this decision, as well as where Ubuntu is in the mobile world. Snowden Has Classified Intel In His Head - Business Insider

National Security Agency whistleblower/leaker Edward Snowden reportedly flew to Hong Kong carrying "four laptop computers that enable him to gain access to some of the US government's most highly-classified secrets," raising the concern that data could have been compromised in China or Russia.

But the information in his head may be more valuable, and accessible, than highly encrypted files.

Beyond trying to acquire information about the 10,000 NSA files Snowden accessed in Hawaii, a U.S. adversary would want to learn from Snowden's expertise of internal NSA processes ? such as its recruiting and vetting processes ? to gain insight into America's decision loop.

"Snowden understood exactly how far he could push [the NSA]," Robert Caruso, a former assistant command security manager in the Navy and consultant, told Business Insider. "That, coupled with his successful exploitation of our entire vetting process, makes him very dangerous."

Basically, Snowden "transformed himself into the kind of cybersecurity expert the NSA is desperate to recruit" while he simultaneously developed the moral convictions motivating his leak of classified documents detailing the NSA's global dragnet.

A quick timeline of Snowden's progression:

• In 2006 Snowden, in a chat room, suggested that he was disgruntled with NSA's snooping when he said "NSA's new surveillance system. ... That's the sound of freedom citizen!"

• Around 2007 he became a CIA technician operating under cover as a ?diplomatic attach?? in Geneva.

• In 2010 the NSA taught him how to be an elite hacker, acquiring the skills to sneak into NSA computer systems and ultimately gather the highly classified surveillance documents he leaked.

• In April 2013 Snowden took a job as an ?infrastructure analyst? ? a role involving finding ways to break into Internet and telephone traffic ? at Booz Allen with the motive to gain "access to lists of machines all over the world the NSA hacked."

By 2013, Snowden knew where he could go and how he could get there without being flagged as a potential whistleblower/leaker/troublemaker.

According to Caruso, Snowden knows how to "red team" humans ? meaning that he can fool the "same people who are charged with keeping the next him from happening."

Essentially, Snowden hacked the vetting process and deftly slipped away through the NSA's cracks.

He then downloaded 10,000 classified files; stashed highly encrypted copies all over the world; flew to China on May 20; met up with Guardian journalists Glenn Greenwald and Ewen MacAskill as well as documentarian Laura Poitras; outed himself; leaked information to the South China Morning Post; and then flew to Moscow on June 23.

The presidents of Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Bolivia have offered Edward Snowden political asylum.

The result has been the exposure of concrete evidence detailing a domestic spying apparatus of questionable effectiveness that for years has benefitted from weak oversight and misdirection to harvest data.

Furthermore, Snowden's disclosures ? one of largest leaks of intelligence in U.S. history ? informed the rest of the world that the NSA, often in cooperation with governments, is collecting their communications too.

All of which is playing out in the form of news reports while Snowden seeks asylum (or potentially citizenship) in Russia.

Which means that the extent of any damage done to the U.S. by Snowden largely depends on what, if anything, he has consciously or inadvertently told authorities in Russia and/or China.

"I cannot and will not touch on his actions after Hawaii," Caruso told Business Insider. "I will say that he understands how to exploit our systems ? human systems, vetting systems, and accountability systems."

Fast forward to Snowden's flight to Moscow.

Olga Bychkova, a radio host from Radio Echo in Moscow, was at the airport's transit zone when Snowden arrived one month ago. She described what she saw to Anna Nemtsova of Foreign Policy:

"I saw about 20 Russian officials, supposedly FSB agents in suits, crowding around somebody in a restricted area of the airport," Bychkova said. "The Kremlin pretends they have nothing to do with him being stuck in Moscow, but in reality they're all over him."

After Snowden, along with his FSB-linked lawyer Anatoly Kucherena,?formally accepted all offers of support or asylum on July 12, former senior U.S. intelligence analyst Joshua Foust, wrote that the "involvement of known FSB operatives at his [Snowden's] asylum acceptance ... suggests this was a textbook [Russian] intelligence operation, and not a brave plea for asylum from political persecution."

Snowden, in a letter to former U.S. senator Gordon Humphrey (Rep-NH) published on July 16, denied that he has or will provide information to a foreign intelligence service:

"I have not provided any information that would harm our people ? agent or not ? and I have no intention to do so. ... Further, no intelligence service - not even our own - has the capacity to compromise the secrets I continue to protect. ... I cannot be coerced into revealing that information, even under torture."

Some of those secret files make up "basically?the instruction manual for how the NSA is built," according to Greenwald, who was given a copy in Hong Kong.

Other secrets lie in the CIA technician-turned-NSA hacker's ability to understand and exploit the "human systems, vetting systems, and accountability systems" of the world's largest spy agency.

And?Edward Snowden, the elite American hacker who "carefully read" 10,000 classified NSA files and knows his way NSA interviews, is in the jurisdiction of Russian intelligence agents, who are masters of human exploitation.

Israelis, Palestinians skeptical about peace talks

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israeli and Palestinian officials voiced skepticism Sunday that they can move toward a peace deal, as the sides inched toward what may be the first round of significant negotiations in five years.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry announced late last week that an agreement has been reached that establishes the basis for resuming peace talks. He cautioned that such an agreement still needs to be formalized, suggesting that gaps remain.

In his first on-camera comment Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared to lower expectations by saying the talks will be tough and any agreement would have to be ratified by Israelis in a national referendum.

Netanyahu pledged to insist on Israel's security needs above all ? saying his main guiding principles will be to maintain a Jewish majority in Israel and avoid a future Palestinian state in the West Bank becoming an Iranian-backed "terror state."

A lifelong hawk, Netanyahu has been a reluctant latecomer to the idea of Palestinian statehood, and his critics say he uses the pretext of security to avoid engaging in good-faith negotiations.

"I am committed to two objectives that must guide the result ? if there will be a result. And if there will be a result, it will be put to a national referendum," he said at the start of his weekly Cabinet meeting. "It won't be easy. But we are entering the talks with integrity, honesty, and hope that this process is handled responsibly, seriously and to the point."

Hardliners have floated referendum proposals before, usually as an attempt to add an additional obstacle to any efforts to cede war-won territories as part of a future peace agreement.

Palestinian officials were silent Sunday.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has not spoken about the possible resumption of negotiations since Kerry's announcement Friday. In an attempt to restrict official Palestinian comment, Abbas' office said only two top aides, Nabil Abu Rdeneh and Yasser Abed Rabbo would be allowed to speak to reporters. Neither was available Sunday.

Abbas had previously refused to negotiate with Israel so long as settlement construction continued in part of his hoped-for state. Netanyahu countered by saying he would only enter talks without preconditions.

The two sides are now set to hold more talks in Washington in coming days or weeks on the framework of negotiations, meaning a resumption of talks is not yet assured.

Gaps remain on three issues Palestinians say need to be settled before talks can begin ? the baseline for border talks, the extent of a possible Israeli settlement slowdown and a timetable for releasing veteran Palestinian prisoners.

The Palestinians want to establish a state in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem, territories Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast War. Abbas seeks a commitment from Netanyahu that Israel's pre-1967 border will serve as a baseline for negotiations, but the Israeli leader has refused to do so. Previous rounds of negotiations were conducted on those lines.

Two Palestinian officials said Saturday that Abbas agreed to resume talks only after Kerry gave him a letter guaranteeing that the pre-1967 borders would serve as a baseline. The officials, privy to internal discussions, spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.

A Western official denied the 1967 borders would be the starting point for negotiators.

Israel has said it will release some Palestinian prisoners as a good will gesture, but there are few other official details to emerge about the framework of the talks.

The actual talks are to produce a deal on the borders between Israel and a future Palestine, a partition of Jerusalem, the fate of refugees and security arrangements.

While a majority of Israelis support a two-state solution with the Palestinians, polls suggest there is less support for a partition of Jerusalem.

The Palestinians want east Jerusalem as their future capital. Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005, and the territory has since been taken over by the Islamic militant Hamas group that does not accept Abbas' authority.

Israel and the Palestinians have engaged in several rounds of negotiations since Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization recognized each other in 1993.

At least twice, in 2001 and in 2008, the two sides reportedly made significant progress. Since then, many on both sides have become skeptical about a possible deal.

Palestinians suspect Netanyahu is interested in the process of negotiations, as a diplomatic cover, but not in an actual deal. Israelis fear territory they hand over to a weak Abbas could quickly turn into a staging ground for attacks on them by Palestinian militants, as happened in Gaza.

"The chances for a permanent solution are not high," Interior Minister Gideon Saar told Israel Radio. "The Palestinians are not ready to make the historic decision to end the conflict between them and us."

The Palestinians, too, were hardly optimistic.

"We are skeptical about these talks because the Israelis are not going to stop building in the settlements and because they didn't accept the '67 borders," said Tawfiq Tirawi, a member of Abbas' Fatah Party. "What we got in return for going back to negotiations is an American pledge that the talks will be on the '67 borders, and historically the Americans always gave us such pledges but they never abided by these pledges."

Drones aren?t just for the CIA anymore. While Predators and Reapers still patrol the skies of the Middle East and South Asia, automated flight technology has burst into the consumer realm in a big way. Brands, scientists, government services and regular people are taking advantage of cheap and easy to control compact flight systems with decent lift capacity for cargo or equipment. Even former editor of Wired magazine Chris Anderson foresaw the drone trend and left Wired to become CEO of 3D Robotics, a DIY drone-building company. Soon enough drones may be ubiquitous, zipping around the skies on errands, surveillance tasks or even as artistic tools.

Imagine you?re in a field at a summer festival, far from the long lines for food or drinks. You thirst for a beer, or hunger for a burrito, but are unwilling or unable to stand in line for hours. What do you do?

Drones to the rescue! Flying delivery robots have been increasingly experimented with by DIY drone enthusiasts and major brands looking to revolutionize small parcel delivery. Via an app that taps into the user?s GPS location, drone systems can zero in on a particular location and deploy cargo by parachute or manual extraction while hovering. Some developers use straight-flying robots, like the Burrito Bomber that releases a burrito in a parachute-controlled parabola. Others, such as the beer-delivering drone of South Africa, hover high over the target and parachute the cargo directly down. As parachutes are not very accurate these would only really work outside with lots of open space and cooperative crowds.

Enter the big brand. Perhaps the most efficient drone delivery system, and the one most likely to see implementation in cramped urban environments, is manual extraction from a hovering platform shown in the DomiCopter video above. While currently only capable of short trips, the pizza magnate is seriously testing drone delivery and it?s rumored that a Domino?s Flight Academy might be in the works. With longer range drones, a central warehouse could quickly serve a large urban area without being hindered by traffic ? and this doesn?t apply to just pizza. Any small parcel could be drone delivered in a city, if the recipients were willing to go up to a roof or down to the sidewalk to receive it. But this would require major legislative approval in addition to improved drone safety, automation and carrying capacity so in the meanwhile some restaurants are serving burgers with hovering delivery trays.

There are so many applications for drones, from simple surveillance to search and rescue, wildlife monitoring and geological 3D mapping. Some very creative uses are popping up in the art world, with arrays of synchronized drones programmed to move together in very precise formations. One of the most stunning examples was the ?Meet Your Creator? troupe of 16 quadrotors that danced and manipulated sound and light at the Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors? Showcase 2012.

Created by Marshmallow Laser Feast, the show used quadrotor drones with mounted LEDs and motorized mirrors that reflected and diverted light to create floating light sculptures. Check out the behind the scenes on this and some of their other work here.

While the next step may be to bring such exhibitions outside (imagine performances on the the scale of fireworks shows), there is a big legal gray area around the commercial and personal use of drones in public. As more and more people get their hands on this technology and put cameras on them, a serious debate has arisen between protecting freedom of speech and the right to privacy. Some call for less regulation, but that hasn?t prevented a few states from banning drone photography. What this means for the budding industry and its artistic side remains to be seen, but there will be surely some degree of flexibility since many drone activities (like drone paintball) require a mounted camera.

Google to fund Taiwanese chipmaker to push Google Glass

(Reuters) - Google Inc will take a 6.3 percent stake in the unit of Taiwanese chipmaker Himax Technologies Inc that develops display technology for devices such as Google Glass, Himax said.

The investment will help fund the production of liquid crystal on silicon chips and modules used in head-mounted devices such as Google Glass, head-up displays and pico-projectors, Himax said in a statement.

Google, which reported lower-than-expected results last week, is pushing forward with Google Glass, a product which CEO Larry Page has described as vital to the company's future success.

The agreement also allows Google to raise its stake in the unit, Himax Display Inc, to 14.8 percent within a year, Himax said.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

Google Glass, announced in June last year, is a stamp-sized electronic display mounted on the left side of a pair of eyeglass frames that can record video, access messages and retrieve information from the Web.

With this investment, Google will join Intel's Intel Capital Corp, Khosla Ventures I LP and KPCB Holdings as a core shareholder of the chipmaker's unit.

The transaction is expected to close in the current quarter.
