More than 760,000 Con Ed customers in NYC still without power

(Reuters) - New York power company Consolidated Edison Inc said Wednesday it had restored power to over 160,000 of the 930,000 total customers knocked out by Hurricane Sandy, leaving about 764,000 still without power.

Sandy hit the U.S. East Coast Monday night and left almost 8.5 million homes and businesses without power in 21 states from North Carolina to Maine and as far west as Illinois, which surpassed the 8.4 million customers left in the dark by Hurricane Irene last year.

Sandy knocked out power to about 30 percent of Con Edison's more than three million power customers in New York City and Westchester County.

Con Edison said Sandy was the largest storm-related outage in its history. The previous record was the more than 200,000 customers affected by Hurricane Irene in 2011.

On Tuesday, Con Edison estimated that customers in Brooklyn and Manhattan served by underground electric equipment should have power back within four days.

Restoration to all customers in other areas served by overhead power lines will take at least a week.

Last night, the company said it had to cut power to about 160,000 customers in southern Brooklyn and central Staten Island due to Sandy-related problems on high-voltage systems supplying electricity to those areas.

The company also said it reduced voltage to several neighborhoods in Brooklyn by 8 percent last night as workers address the problem.

Officials at Con Edison were not immediately available to say where most of the outages were Wednesday morning. On Tuesday, the company said about 250,000 customers in Manhattan, 180,000 in Westchester County, 108,000 in Queens, 109,000 in Staten Island, 87,000 in Brooklyn, and 45,000 in the Bronx were without power. Clarkson grand marshal for pre-Mardi Gras parade

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Pop star Kelly Clarkson will ride as celebrity grand marshal when the Krewe of Endymion parade rolls on the Saturday before Mardi Gras in 2013.

Clarkson was the first winner of the Fox reality show "American Idol" in 2002. Her hits include "A Moment Like This" and "Because of You."

Organizers say she'll perform at Endymion's ball at the Superdome after the parade.

Clarkson may be upstaged at the Feb. 9 parade by a float that organizers say will be the largest and most elaborate in Carnival history.

The super float will be 250 feet long and carry more than 200 riders. Its design focuses on Pontchartrain Beach, the amusement park that entertained generations on the New Orleans lakefront before closing in 1983.

Mardi Gras is Feb. 12.

HBT: Sandoval's 3-HR game as good as it gets

Before Pablo Sandoval got to Justin Verlander twice and Al Alburquerque once for his first ever three-game game in the World Series opener, eight players in major league history had hit three homers in a postseason game:

Babe Ruth (NYY) ? Game 4, 1926 WS ? 3-for-3, 4 RBI, 2 BB
Babe Ruth (NYY) ? Game 4, 1928 WS ? 3-for-5, 3 RBI
Bob Robertson (Pit) ? Game 2, 1971 NLCS ? 4-for-5, 5 RBI, 2B
Reggie Jackson (NYY) ? Game 6, 1977 WS ? 3-for-3, 5 RBI, BB
George Brett (KC) ? Game 3, 1978 ALCS ? 3-for-5, 3 RBI
Adam Kennedy (ANA) ? Game 5, 2002 ALCS ? 4-for-4, 5 RBI
Adrian Beltre (Tex) ? Game 4, 2011 ALDS ? 3-for-4, 3 RBI
Albert Pujols (StL) ? Game 3, 2011 WS ? 5-for-6, 6 RBI

Kennedy may yet rank as the most unlikely of the three-homer games, considering that he?s not a power hitter at all. He?s homered once in his 24 other career postseason games.

However, once factoring in the quality of the competition, Sandoval?s seems just as unlikely. And it?s the most impressive of this whole bunch.

- Including the postseason, Verlander had given up 21 homers in 262 2/3 innings this season or one every 12 2/3 innings. Sandoval hit two in four innings off him tonight.

- Albuquerque has never allowed a homer in 56 2/3 innings in the regular season. He did surrender one to Robinson Cano in the ALDS a year ago.

- No one homers in AT&T Park. The Giants hit 31 and allowed 53 there this year. Sandoval was the first person to hit three homers there since Kevin Elster did it in the park?s?inaugural?game 12 years ago. Only four players hit two homers in a game there this year, and the lone Giant to do it was Sandoval.

Besides Sandoval, Brett probably had the toughest assignment in getting to three homers; he was facing Hall of Famer Catfish Hunter when he did in 1978. However, it was in a losing cause in the ALCS, so that costs him some points. Jackson?s three-homer game was more?crucial, coming in a Game 6 that clinched the 1977 series for the Yankees. Pujols was the one player to hit three homers and still add two more hits.

But Sandoval?s game seems to me to the most impressive of the bunch. To get to those two pitchers in that ballpark in a World Series Game is maybe the highlight of the 2012 season to date.

NY court: Lap dances are not art and are taxable

(AP) ? Lap dances are taxable because they don't promote culture in a community the way ballet or other artistic endeavors do, New York's highest court concluded Tuesday in a sharply divided ruling.

The court split 4-3, with the dissenting judges saying there's no distinction in state law between "highbrow dance and lowbrow dance," so the case raises "significant constitutional problems."

The lawsuit was filed by Nite Moves in suburban Albany, which was arguing fees for admission to the strip club and for private dances are exempt from sales taxes.

The court majority said taxes apply to many entertainment venues, such as amusement parks and sporting events. It ruled the club has failed to prove it qualifies for the exemption for "dramatic or musical arts performances" that was adopted by the Legislature "with the evident purpose of promoting cultural and artistic performances in local communities."

The majority reached similar conclusions about admission fees to watch dances done onstage around a pole, as well as for lap dances or private dances.

W. Anderson McCullough, attorney for the club, said he and his client were bitterly disappointed by the judges' ruling.

"We thought they were listening, and some of them were," he said.

If ice shows with intricately choreographed ice-dancing routines to music haven't been regarded by lawmakers as qualifying, then it was "surely ... not irrational" for the tribunal "to conclude that a club presenting performances by women gyrating on a pole to music, however artistic or athletic their practiced moves are, was also not a qualifying performance entitled to exempt status," wrote Judges Carmen Beauchamp Ciparick, Victoria Graffeo, Eugene Pigott Jr. and Theodore Jones Jr.

In the dissent, Judge Robert Smith wrote that it was a question of what the law and regulations actually say. The law defines a "dramatic or musical arts admission charge" for "a live dramatic, choreographic or musical performance," he noted. Choreography means dance, and clearly the women at Nite Moves dance, he wrote.

"The majority implies that since the Legislature did not exclude from the entertainment tax other lowbrow forms of entertainment, such as baseball games and animal acts ... it would not have wanted to exclude pole dancing; but the issue is not what the Legislature would have wanted to do, but what it did," Smith wrote. Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman and Judge Susan Read agreed.

Smith added that while he finds this sort of dancing "unedifying ? indeed, I am stuffy enough to find it distasteful," discriminating on the basis of content such as imposing a tax on Hustler magazine and giving the New Yorker an exemption "would surely be unconstitutional. It is not clear to me why the discrimination that the majority approves in this case stands on any firmer constitutional footing."

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance has said all along the exemption didn't qualify in this situation, spokesman Cary Ziter said. "We're pleased with this decision, because it gives similar businesses clear guidance on the issue of sales tax when it comes to live exotic dance establishments."

Nite Moves was originally assessed $124,000 in sales tax due plus interest, Ziter said. The department was unaware of similar cases working their way through the courts, he said.

McCullough said he and his client still need to look at some alternatives, including whether to petition the U.S. Supreme Court and whether they can present better proof to the tax tribunal that the performances should qualify for exemptions.

Zynga lays off over 100 staff, closes UK, Japan and Boston studios

Everybody?s favourite casual gaming firm, Zynga, yesterday laid off around 150 employees, shuttering its studios in the UK, Japan and Boston in the process. The axe reportedly also fell on employees at the company?s Austin and Massachusetts studios, in a brutal cull which took the rank and file by surprise and left them only two hours to clear their desks. Ouch.

It sounds like a particularly bitter pill for the Boston team, who, TechCrunch report, were on the verge of releasing a new product which had been the source of much enthusiasm within the company. It looks like that will now never see the light of day.

The announcement follows a series of high-profile departures from the company over the course of the summer, and no shortage of rumours regarding the working conditions to be found at Zynga. It?s been a pretty calamitous year for a company that was valued at $7 billion dollars back in December 2011. Since then, Zynga?s stock has collapsed from $10 dollars a share to a miserable $2.20, taking a hit with Facebook?s IPO launch, gradually crumbling under the abrasion of multiple high-profile IP lawsuits, and then tumbling off a cliff with the ludicrous $200 million plus acquisition of OMGPOP, developer of the fleetingly popular but otherwise obviously crap Draw Something.

The Telegraph has a particularly bleak perspective on all of this, interviewing a (presumably Cockney) serial tech stock investor, who says: ?From the investment side, the professionals know that this is just a high-beta play ? ride the wave while it?s going up and jump off just before the muppets get burned. The retail investors, as usual, are screwed.?

Markets recover as China hopes offset Europe gloom

LONDON (AP) ? Financial markets edged higher Wednesday, recovering from a heavy sell-off the day before and as upbeat economic indicators from China offset the impact of dire ones from Europe.

A key survey of Chinese manufacturing activity, the so-called Purchasing Managers' Index, rose to 49.1 points in October, a three-month high. Though that still shows it the sector is contracting, it is a big improvement from September's level of 47.9.

Some investors fear the slowdown in the Chinese economy ? which has been a pillar of global growth in recent years ? would be sharp and difficult to handle. The latest indicators ease those concerns.

"The strong improvement adds to recent signs of stabilization of the Chinese economy, thus underpinning our view that the slowdown in activity is bottoming out," said Nikolaus Keis, analyst at UniCredit Research.

By the market close in Europe, Britain's FTSE 100 was up 0.1 percent at 5,804.78 while Germany's DAX rose 0.3 percent to 7,192 85. France's CAC-40 gained 0.6 percent to end at 3,426.49.

Wall Street mostly traded higher a day after suffering sharp losses. The Dow rose 0.1 percent to 13,112 while the S&P 500 was flat at 1,413.

Shares in Facebook surged 20 percent after the social network beat expectations for its earnings. Meanwhile, aircraft maker Boeing Co. raised its profit expectations for the year, driving its stock 1.1 percent higher.

The upbeat figures reassured investors somewhat after poor earnings reports the day before and more grim economic indicators from Europe.

Government debt in the 17-country eurozone rose to 90 percent of the bloc's economic output at the end of the second quarter, according to official data. That's the highest in the currency union's 13-year history and bodes ill for governments trying hard to reduce debt by means of tough tax hikes and spending cuts.

Meanwhile, the Purchasing Managers' Index for the economy of the 17-country eurozone, published by financial data company Markit, fell in October to its lowest level in over three years. A measure of German business confidence also fell.

"Surveys worryingly indicate that the eurozone downturn is, if anything, deepening rather than easing," said Howard Archer, chief European economist at IHS Global Insight.

The auto sector was also in focus after France's PSA Peugeot Citroen said the government was offering it a ?7 billion ($9.1 billion) lifeline. In return, the Socialist government is expected to demand a reduction in layoffs as well as the suspension in dividend payments. Shares in Peugeot were down 4.6 percent.

Volkswagen AG saw its shares rise 3.7 percent after it reported a 58 percent increase in its third quarter net profit.

Earlier, in Asia, stocks showed some initial resilience but then faded.

Japan's Nikkei 225, after swinging between gains and losses, fell 0.7 percent to close at 8,954.30. Hong Kong's Hang Seng added 0.3 percent to 21,763.78. South Korea's Kospi lost 0.7 percent to 1,913.96.

Mainland Chinese shares were mixed. The Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.1 percent to 2,115.99 but the smaller Shenzhen Composite Index fell 0.4 percent to 866.45. Indian markets were closed for a holiday.

Benchmark oil for December delivery was down $1.26 to $85.41 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.2944 from $1.2976 late Tuesday in New York.

GreenWave Reality ships WiFi-aware light bulbs that flick on through motion and smartphones

GreenWave Reality ships WiFi light bulbs that flick on through motion and smartphones, join the 21st centuryWe've seen connected light bulbs before, some more sophisticated than others, but they're rarely as straightforward as GreenWave Reality's just-shipping Connected Lighting Solution. Eco-friendly LED bulbs in the lineup include support for WiFi and are immediately controllable from a smartphone or tablet as soon as they're receiving power. Basics controls like group presets and timed lighting are just the start; if you're not worried about leaving anyone in the dark, the bulbs can respond to motion sensors and only illuminate the rooms that need attention. And while the intelligence isn't new in itself, GreenWave would argue that sheer accessibility gives it an edge, with electric utilities in Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden skipping the retail middleman by selling directly. Don't despair if you live in the US: the linked-up lighting is cleared for eventual use by Americans who'd like to save both energy and a trip to the light switch.

Why Greg Smith left Goldman Sachs

Greg Smith wrote the essay that echoed across Wall Street like a thunderclap.

Smith was a vice president at Goldman Sachs until March. He announced his departure from the investment bank with a blistering editorial in The New York Times, accusing Goldman of routinely deceiving clients and relentlessly pursuing profit at the expense of morality.

And he struck a nerve. The essay went viral in the financial world and beyond. Smith was praised for uncloaking corruption that was crying out to be addressed, and also derided as a disgruntled employee.

Goldman Sachs denies Smith's allegations about deceiving clients. The bank says it took his concerns seriously, thoroughly investigated them, and found no evidence to support them.

Smith's book, "Why I Left Goldman Sachs," is being released Monday. It's a window into a company that is notoriously tight-lipped, with stories about a swaggering place where interns arise for 5 a.m. meetings and business trips mean slapping down $150 for one person's dinner.

What Smith hopes to do, he says, is educate people about how Wall Street works, and fuel a public conversation about what went wrong ethically, and how to fix it. The practices that caused the financial crisis, he says, were never really resolved; they're just lying dormant.

Smith, 33, gave his first print interview to The Associated Press. Excerpts have been edited for clarity and length.

Q: Tell us about March 14, the day you left Goldman. You were working in the London office, and you say you had already cleaned out your desk and had been told the editorial would go online at 7 a.m. your time.

A: I get up at 6 a.m., and I type a very heartfelt email to nine people in Europe, including the CEO of Goldman Europe, and express in very personal terms why I'm leaving. I talk about exactly what I thought was wrong with the place, this obvious deceit of clients.

Within five minutes I get an email back from someone on the management committee in Europe who says, "I'm really surprised to hear this. I'm in London today. I'd love to meet with you." I get two voice mails from two other people. And then at 6:57 or 6:58, the piece comes online.

Q: What did the bank do?

A: My work BlackBerry stayed on for about three more hours, and I started getting emails from clients who were saying, "We completely agree with you, we don't trust Goldman Sachs, we do business with you guys with a 'buyer beware' attitude." I started getting text messages from Goldman managing directors who were supportive as well. And Goldman reached out to me in formal fashion and said, "We're sorry to hear you resigned; we'd like to air these concerns out."

Q: The bank denies everything you've charged about them ripping off clients.

The thing that disappoints me most is that management is denying there's a problem. Why not try to repair the trust instead? Clients are telling you they don't trust you. There's been an SEC fraud suit that was settled for half a billion dollars.

(The Securities and Exchange Commission accused the bank of selling investments to clients when the bank believed the investments were going to fail. Goldman paid $550 million. It remains the largest SEC penalty paid by a Wall Street firm.)

I'm not some lone voice who thought there was a problem, a change from a client fiduciary model (doing what's best for the client) to use-the-client-to-extract-wealth model. It's a problem that many, many of my colleagues felt and that the public feels as well, borne out in SEC suits and congressional testimonies and clients saying publicly that they don't trust us.

Q: Were you just disgruntled? Maybe you didn't get the bonus or the promotion you wanted?

A: I was actually doing well in my career at Goldman. My bonus, I was told I outperformed my peers by 10 percent. I'm a competitive person, and my goal was to get promoted, and I was told by multiple partners that I was two years away from getting promoted. So it certainly was a goal of mine. And on the compensation side, I was earning a lot of money and had a very good living, so I was grateful for what I was earning. It allowed me to have a good life and to support my family and to do things that I thought were valuable.

Q: But you were at Goldman for almost 12 years, if you start with your summer internship in 2000. Weren't there times when you should have stood up, should have said something about what you thought was morally wrong?

A: I actually made a conscious decision not to sell toxic deals to clients. I didn't think it was the right thing to do, but I also saw the idea that if clients' trust is being burned and they're getting blown up, you're not going to have a career for very long.

Now that does not mean I was not part of a system that was doing things that were unethical. In the book, I try to show some of the conflicts I noticed that gave me pause. For many years, I gave the firm the benefit of the doubt.

It absolutely could have happened quicker. But one can always see things earlier and sooner.

Q: OK, but isn't the purpose of any capitalist company to make money? You certainly made a lot of money at Goldman. (Smith says he made in the "high hundreds of thousands of dollars" in his best years but declines to be more specific. His publisher declines to say what he was paid for the book.)

Capitalism should be where everyone competes hard and makes money, in an environment where there is fair play and competitiveness. Right now the system is stacked against everyone else in favor of the banks.

It's a little like a casino. A real casino is regulated and there are cameras everywhere and the casino cannot see your cards. With Wall Street today, the bank can see what every government, every pension fund, every hedge fund in the world is doing. They can effectively see everyone's cards. Then, instead of facilitating the client's will, they're trying to get the client to facilitate their will.

Q: What do you hope to accomplish with your book?

A: People know there's this huge conflict, and that things are being done that are unethical but are not necessarily illegal. But nobody can put their finger on exactly what the problem is. My goal with the book was to write it to a general reader who knows nothing about finance. By the time someone reaches the end of the book, they can say, "I can now speak more intelligently about where the conflicts of interest are, and I can lobby my congressman or I can speak about it more." If people are not educated about what the issues are, they're powerless. That was the problem with Occupy Wall Street ? they didn't know what they were protesting.

Q: The banks are going to say any bad practices were caused by just a few bad actors, and that those guys are gone.

A: This is not some conspiracy of five people sitting in a room plotting to destroy the world. This is far more boring. This is where people have created a perverse incentive system.

If someone can overcharge a client by a million dollars, their leaders are going to say, "Great job, we just made an extra million dollars off this pension fund."

Q: So the endemic part is that people don't speak up?

A: People don't like being asked or compelled to make morally dubious decisions. But unfortunately a lot of people's livelihoods are tied up in this, and it's not an easy thing to unwind. Their lives are caught up in this system where they're sending their kids to private schools ? it's almost like the machine for them is working so well that there's no way to undo it unless you want to change your lifestyle.

Q: Why should we care about what happens on Wall Street?

A: You see a lot of commentary that Wall Street is just rich people gambling with other rich people's money. I want people to know that it ultimately affects everyone. In 2008, banks had to be bailed out and that hits taxpayers. If you're a teacher or a fireman or a charity, and you have an investment fund that is trading with Wall Street, and Wall Street is not being held accountable and behaving ethically, then that directly impacts everyone.

Q: What about the reaction of your family and friends to all this? You didn't tell them about the editorial beforehand.

A: No, my mother would have been really upset, and frankly my mother is still very upset. She's mostly worried about how I don't have a job right now. For my parents' generation, the idea of stability is very important, while my generation is a little more idealistic about wanting to actually change things, even if it involves some kind of personal risk. It took me a while to show my mother that I was actually very proud of this.

WebMD Medical News By Kathleen Doheny Reviewed by Louise Chang, MD Oct. 18, 2012 (Anaheim, Calif.) ? Green tea and its extracts have long been studied for health benefits, including cancer prevention. Now, researchers have new clues about how it may work to help prevent or slow the growth of prostate and breast cancers. Researchers presented the new findings here today at the American Association for Cancer Research meeting on cancer prevention. Green Tea and Prostate Cancer Men with prostate cancer who drank green tea had less prostate tissue inflammation, linked to cancer growth, and other changes than those who didn?t drink it, says Susanne M. Henning, PhD, RD, adjunct professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. ?We were able to show the green tea polyphenols (antioxidants) reached the prostate tissue and they did modify inflammation of the prostate,? she says. Polyphenols are antioxidants that protect against cell damage. Henning?s team assigned 79 men with prostate cancer scheduled to undergo surgery to drink either six cups of brewed green tea or water daily. They did so for three to eight weeks, depending on when their surgery was scheduled. Before and after the study, Henning obtained urine and blood samples. She collected samples of prostate tissue after the surgery. She reported on the 67 men who finished the study. Levels of prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, were ?lower after the study in those who drank green teas. Higher levels of PSA, a protein produced by the prostate gland, may reflect prostate cancer. An indicator of inflammation, called nuclear factor-kappaB, was also reduced in those who drank green tea compared to those who didn?t, Henning found. Inflammation is linked to cancer growth. ?We were not able to inhibit tumor growth,? she says. But the study length may not have been long enough to show that; a longer-term study is needed, she says. The National Institutes of Health funded the study. Green Tea & Prostate Cancer: Implications Prostate cancer is typically a slow-growing cancer, Henning says. That makes it an ideal cancer to try diet interventions to slow it even more. ?Green tea is high in polyphenols and it?s convenient,? she says. Other research has found that green tea may slow prostate cancer. An Italian study found that men who had a precursor to prostate cancer and drank green tea were less likely to get prostate cancer, Henning says.? Now, Henning is studying whether adding quercetin, an antioxidant found in apples and onions, to the green tea will ramp up its cancer-fighting ability. Sumanta Pal, MD, assistant professor of medical oncology at the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center in Duarte, Calif., reviewed the study findings for WebMD. ?Studies such as this are critical to confirm or support a plausible explanation for how green tea may work,? he says. More study is needed, however, before making any diet recommendations. Green Tea & Breast Cancer Other researchers reported that an extract from green tea, Polyphenon E, may help inhibit breast cancer by affecting substances called growth factors. Growth factors are involved in the signals that tell breast cancer to grow. In earlier research, Katherine Crew, MD, assistant professor of medicine and epidemiology at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, had assigned 40 women already treated for breast cancer to take 400, 600, or 800 milligrams of the extract or to take a placebo twice daily for six months. That was a study to examine any toxic effects of the extract. For the current study, she evaluated blood and urine samples from 34 of the women to see how the extract might work as a cancer fighter. ?We wanted to better understand the biological effects,? she says. ?After two months of Polyphenon E, there was a reduction in hepatocyte growth factor,? she says. This is one of the growth factors that affect breast cancer cell growth, spread, and invasion. That reduction declined and was not different from the placebo group at four months, however. It?s still too early to recommend green tea extract as a way to prevent breast cancer, Crew says. Green Tea & Breast Cancer: Perspective The new research on green tea and breast cancer adds to growing evidence of its benefits, according to Joanne Mortimer, MD, director of the Women?s Cancer Program at the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center. ?There really does seem to be something there,? she says. The new study provides a potential explanation for why green tea may help, she says. So should women drink green tea with an eye to prevention of breast cancer? ?I don?t think we are quite ready to make that leap,? Mortimer says. ?But it is pretty interesting.? These findings were presented at a medical conference. They should be considered preliminary as they have not yet undergone the ?peer review? process, in which outside experts scrutinize the data prior to publication in a medical journal. Obama deserves the chance to fulfill his promises - Editorials - The ...

There?s no telling what Barack Obama might have achieved in his first term if he had inherited a nation unencumbered by a global financial crisis and two wars draining the government?s cash reserves.

Elected on hope and great expectations by people disillusioned after eight disastrous years of the Bush administration, Obama faced an insurmountable task: fulfilling voter?s aspirations with the economy crumbling beneath his feet.

Obama?s first term provided a history lesson on the limit of presidential powers. Without a Congress willing to work together for the common good, one man alone cannot dictate prosperity.

That said, Obama did not help himself by focusing on health care during a period of economic chaos. It was a battle better left for a second term.

Despite the disappointments of his first four years, the president managed several remarkable achievements that in another time would have judged his presidency an unequivocal success.

Among them are saving the U.S. auto industry, reforming Wall Street and health care, redirecting foreign policy to fit modern times, pulling U.S. troops out of Iraq and hunting down Osama Bin Laden, and abolishing the ?don?t ask, don?t tell? policy of the military.

Many other presidents have achieved far less, even in two terms.

Although he hasn?t lived up to arguably unrealistic expectations, Obama deserves a second term unfettered by circumstances beyond his control.

Obama is a better choice than Republican Mitt Romney, who would return the U.S. to policies that helped create trouble at home and around the world.

Romney?s saber-rattling over Israel and the Middle East are worrisome, and his promise to pick a fight with China on his first day in office might lead to unfortunate consequences.

On a tour last summer to showcase his foreign policy skills, Romney failed miserably. He offended our British allies over the summer Olympics and went on to make gaffes in every county he visited.

Romney?s apparent willingness to use force, perhaps engaging the U.S. troops in new wars overseas, is disconcerting. Obama has appropriately refused to let Israel cajole us into a war with Iran, but Romney?s team has expressed willingness to join an Israeli strike.

Obama must do more to curtail federal spending. In a second term, the president must generate bipartisan support for a long-term plan that brings down the national debt in predictable measures. The Romney-Ryan plan of assaulting Social Security and Medicare, while giving defense spending a pass, will not help America?s middle class move forward.

Obama is more likely to lead the nation toward a sustainable and futuristic approach to clean energy.

While Obama promotes alternative energy sources, Romney advocates opening up as much of America to drilling as possible. He wants to drill in more offshore locations, and exploit more federal land.

Romney says the government should not pick winners and losers in the energy field ? a critical reference to federal grants to failed solar power projects under Obama ? but he would continue the existing sweetheart deals to oil, gas, coal and nuclear producers. A Romney government would still pick winners, just different ones than Obama.

Obama and the first lady have made education reform a priority, promoting charter schools and placing a national focus on the important role of community and technical colleges.

The Romney-Ryan ticket is full of promise, too, but is woefully short on specifics. To change course so dramatically now presents an unacceptable risk.

The president should be given the opportunity fulfill the greatness anticipated by Americans four years ago. With a recovering economy and the withdrawal from foreign wars within his control, perhaps the expectations his presidency inspired will be within his reach.

(AP) ? Russian state-owned oil giant Rosneft strengthened its hold on the country's lucrative oil industry Monday when it sealed a $61 billion deal, buying TNK-BP, the joint venture between a group of Russian oil oligarchs, and BP, the British the energy company.

BP announced Monday that it had agreed to sell its 50 percent stake in TNK-BP to Rosneft for $17.1 billion in cash and a 12.84 percent stake in the Russian oil group.

In Moscow, Rosneft said it had also agreed to buy the other 50 percent in the joint venture from AAR for $28 billion. Rosneft said the deal with AAR is "entirely independent of the transaction with BP." The Russian oil group said it would finance the deal with its own cash as well as new borrowings.

Rosneft CEO Igor Sechin broke the news about the deal Monday afternoon to President Vladimir Putin, telling him that the deal would be worth about $61 billion.

"This is a good big deal which is important not only for Russia's energy sector but for the entire Russian economy," Putin said in remarks carried by Russian television.

Rosneft shares jumped more than 3 percent on the announcement but rolled back to its morning level of 215 rubles per share, or 1.2 percent up.

BP shares were down 0.3 percent to 449 pence following the announcement. BP said that it would use some of the money from its deal to raise its stake in Rosneft to 19.75 percent.

Russia is an important part of BP's business, accounting for a quarter of its oil production. BP Chief Executive Bob Dudley has looked to the country's vast oil resources as a key ingredient to the company's recovery from the disastrous oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The TNK-BP joint venture has been troublesome ? albeit lucrative ? for BP. The UK oil group's disputes with its partner ? in 2011, it tried to strike a separate partnership with Rosneft to explore for oil beneath the Arctic Ocean, only to be sued by AAR ? have alarmed BP's investors and hit its share price.

Dudley said in the statement on Monday that "BP intends to be a long-term investor in Rosneft - an investment which I believe will deliver value for our shareholders over the next decade and beyond."

Sechin sounded optimistic about their tie-up with BP, saying that his company "would benefit from BP's experience and its track record of implementing best international practices in Russia."

Ratings agency Fitch last week warned Rosneft of a possible rating downgrade because of the TNK-BP deal. Fitch said the Russian company should have no problems raising the money to pay for 50 percent, but said the purchase of the other 50 percent could require so much borrowing that it could lead to a downgrade.

Watch This Cannonball Tear Through a Modern Car Like It Was Parchment

The Civil War ended almost 150 years ago, and by today's standards the weapons used are old-fashioned and outdated. But don't for a second think that means they weren't incredibly lethal. Because it turns out a modern car is still no match for a Civil War-era cannon. More »

Remembering My Grandpa ? the Great Depression Teacher | Three ...

On Friday, October 12, I got a frantic call from my wife at work. She was sobbing, and couldn?t hardly get any words out.

Jen: ?Charlie?.I?m so sorry.?
Charlie: ?What happen? Did you get in an accident??
Jen: ?No. Your Grandpa passed away this morning. He died about 8:30am at home with your Dad and Grandma. I?m so sorry.?

Life at that pointed seemed to jolt into slow motion. With how busy my Friday was it hit me like a Mike Tyson punch in the first round of a title fight. I couldn?t believe it. My Grandpa at 92 years old was dead. The guy that taught me so much had passed away. It took about 5 seconds for wife?s words to hit my head, and about 2 seconds from there to hit my heart. That?s is when the tears began to flow. Geez?how unprofessional did I look to all my co-workers who were gathered around my desk troubleshooting some problems. I didn?t care?I?d just lost my Grandpa. Then I realized I could NEVER TALK TO HIM AGAIN! Ouch.

About 5 months ago, as Grandpa had been going through some health problems, I had a dream one night about him. In it I had a vision of my Grandpa dying, and I was crying and screaming, ?I can?t talk to him anymore. Never.? I woke up in cold sweat saying to myself I want to talk to you Grandpa. It was a glimpse into how much I?cherished?talking to a man who taught me so much about loving the Lord, loving your wife as Christ loves the church, working hard, being thrifty with your money, fighting for what you have, protecting your family, hunting, farming (corn/beans/pigs/chickens), and countless life stories on the Great Depression. As you can see the pain of his death cut me. ?Cut me deep.

Leaving a Legacy

Over the past 2 1/2 years that Aaron and I have been writing developing ThreeThriftyGuys I?ve written a ton about Grandpa Gerhardt. He has had the most pronounced impact on my life, and particularly in the area of finances. His family?s pain from the Great Depression in particular spoke to me the most. Probably because of how I saw him live such a different lifestyle than everyone else in my circle of influence. He always ate everything on his plate, would fix anything just to get a few more years of use out of it, he recycled everything before it was ever called being ?Green?, and he always saved for a rainy day.

On top of that he was devoted to Lord, his wife, and family, and that showed itself in quality time with these things he valued. Grandpa always loved having coffee at the kitchen table and chatting about the crops, the market, or what has been happening around the community/church. When you spent time with him you felt like he really loved ya, and valued your time and presence. Do you ever have people in your life that invest so much into your life that make you feel this way?

Over these 2 1/2 years I?ve written about 30 articles where I?ve either written exclusively about my Grandpa?s experiences or mentioned him. Here are my top 10 articles on Gerhardt Gutz:

Well Done Good and Faithful Servant

To date, Grandpa is the closest person that I?ve ever known who has died. Towards the end of his life he was experiencing a lot of pain, and?deterioration of bodily functions, which was hard to watch. The weekend before he died all the?grand-kids?came back home and spent time with him. It was a great weekend to get the whole family together as we had all the grand-kids out in the field finishing up harvest. Grandpa?s spirits were up as the playfulness of the?grand-kids?and the smell of harvest filled the aroma of the house.

That weekend I looked at my Grandpa and said, ?Grandpa, it?s alright to go. You?ve lived a good life. I know your body is hurting, and it?s alright for you to?go. You?ve already lived your legacy.? When I said that I didn?t expect him to die 5 days later. Geez. If I?d known he would have gone so quickly after I?d said that I?d never said it. :)

With all kidding aside we all knew soon would be Grandpa?s time to go. He?d already left his imprint on our family. Just saying goodbye is so hard. At his funeral I had the?privilege?of giving his eulogy, and the verse that spoke to me the most about my Grandpa was Matthew 25:23 ? ?Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.Come and share your master?s happiness!??

I?ll miss ya Grandpa. Love ya!

**I?apologize?about the ?soapbox? moment of mentioning my Grandpa?s death, but there are certain people who leave a?indelible impact on your life that you can?t help but mention.?

Egypt prosecutor to probe election challenges

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's prosecutor general has ordered an investigation into complaints by former prime minister Ahmed Shafiq into alleged irregularities and forgery in the presidential elections he narrowly lost.

Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood scraped in ahead of Shafiq in the elections, Egypt's first freely contested presidential vote, held in multiple rounds this summer. Shafiq's complaints came a day after authorities froze his and his family's assets as part of a probe into his wealth.

Shafiq had complained that some ballots were forged, invisible ink was used during voting, and some Christians were prevented from casting ballots. He said the incidents favored Morsi.

It is not clear what the probe ordered Monday can lead to. The presidential election commission, whose decisions are unchallengeable, had earlier dismissed the same complaints from Shafiq.

SEX CRIMINALS from Fraction, Zdarsky and ... - First Comics News

SEX CRIMINALS UNLEASHED AT NEW YORK COMIC CON

New series by Fraction and Zdarsky to be released in 2013

Comic book creators Matt Fraction (CASANOVA, Avengers vs. X-Men, The Invincible Iron Man) and Chip Zdarsky (Prison Funnies, Monster Cops) invite you to come with them as they release SEX CRIMINALS through Image Comics in 2013. This brand-spanking new sex comedy follows two young lovers as they go on a lust-fueled crime spree with a twist ? when they have sex, time itself seems to stop. Set in a world where the laws of time and space are as dubious and mutable as the laws of man and society, SEX CRIMINALS promises to scandalize, titillate, and provoke when it bursts onto the comics scene next year.

?Not to toot our own horns, but there?s never been a comic book like Sex Criminals before,? Fraction tossed off. ?There?ve been comedy books with sex, or sex comics with comedic moments, but no book with ?sex comedy? as its narrative thrust. Hard to imagine, but comedy and sex, which fit together so naturally literally everywhere else in the entertainment world, don?t get done in comic books. Chip and I are thrilled to be the first ones in there to plant our seed.?

Zdarsky, legendary cartoonist for National Post and impish Canadian prankster, topped that statement: ?This project brings together my two loves: crime and an in-depth exploration of the Western banking system and its ill-effects on society. I?ve spent years working for newspapers and magazines and am looking forward to completing my ?dying industry trifecta? and give comic books my all while holding back the tears.?

Fraction and Zdarsky, having searched long and hard for the perfect collaboration, knew they were destined for each other if only the right project came along. ?Chip is a singular creator in the world of comics: he?s smart, he?s talented, he has an eye unlike any other, and he makes me laugh like a jackal,? Fraction spewed forth. ?He?s like a smutty Day-Glo Will Elder that spells words with u?s where they don?t belong and uses the metric system. I?m excited to think the words ?SEX CRIMINALS? will now appear in his obituary later this year.?

Zdarsky gushed ?There?s a very short list of people who I would want to work with on a comic project and Matt Fraction is at the top of that list. I love the humour he brings to his projects and always thought he should do something all-out funny, because, frankly, there aren?t enough funny books out there since Identity Crisis. No wait. Was Blankets before or after Identity Crisis??

Image Comics was unavailable for comment.

An ongoing comic series that puts the comic back in comics, and the sexy back into sex crime, SEX CRIMINALS comes in 32 full-color pages for a cover price of $3.50.

US nurse arrested in Macedonia awaits trial verdict

By NBC News staff

An Alabama nurse who was on a humanitarian mission in Macedonia is now awaiting a judge's ruling after she was arrested and tried for allegedly stealing rare coins.

Candi Dunlap, of Meridian, Ala., was arrested on Sept. 28 at Macedonia's airport after the coins were found in her carry-on luggage, the Clarion Ledger reported.?

The judge had been expected to rule Friday but delayed her decision until next Wednesday.

Others on the mission trip with Dunlap insisted she was given the coins as a thank you from a Macedonian and that she had no idea they were not to be taken from the country.

U.S. lawmakers representing Meridian have been hopeful she will be released.

"I am hopeful that there will be a resolution to this soon that will allow Candi to return home,"?Rep. Gregg?Harper said Thursday. "We know that this has been an extreme hardship on Candi and her family."

In Washington, the State Department said U.S. Embassy officials in Macedonia have been visiting with Dunlap regularly to ensure she is well treated.

Dunlap's husband, Marc, is also in Macedonia trying to secure her release. He has been posting updates on a Facebook page dedicated to her freedom.

Your Auto Insurance Plan | Quantum

Auto Insurance Glenwood Springs CO Every year, more cars travel America?s roads. This could lead to an increased likelihood of a car accident for you and your family. If you get in a car crash, the auto insurance you own can make a big difference in what happens next. But why do you need to own insurance and exactly how much should you purchase? Car insurance protects you by covering the cost of injury or damage you inflict on others while driving your car, damage to your car or injury to you or your passengers from an accidents, plus specific other situations, such as theft. Your state or province definitely mandates some type of auto insurance. Choosing to drive without owning insurance could mean you have to repair or replace a stolen or damaged vehicle and pay the cost of all the damage for which you might be responsible. Liability: Personal injury and property damage that you have caused will be covered under this type of insurance. If you are in legal trouble, it also pays your legal fees. Local laws typically require minimum amounts of liability insurance, but higher amounts are available and extremely helpful. Personal Injury Protection: This type of insurance pays for all medical treatment for you and other people in your car, no matter who was responsible for the crash. It is mandated in some states and optional in others. Local government typically sets minimum amounts. Medical Payments: This type of coverage is available in states that are not considered no-fault and will pay regardless of who is responsible for an accident. If this policy has been purchased, the insured person will receive payment for reasonable medical and funeral expenses. Collision: This pays for damage to your car caused by an accident. Comprehensive: Cover your car from damages from other sources by purchasing this type of insurance. This includes protection from theft, vandalism, and weather damage. Uninsured Motorist: This pays for damages when an insured person is injured in an accident caused by a driver who does not have insurance. Under-Insured Motorist: Just like uninsured motorist protection, this kind of insurance protects you against people driving without sufficient insurance protection. Other policies, including car rental and emergency road service, are also available. Your car insurance payments vary by company and will depend on several factors, such as: * Which policies you choose * The type of the car you own * Your driving record * Your age, sex and marital status * The place where you live Some have consider car insurance as a necessary evil, but it can truly rescue you from a financial disaster. Review your needs, research your options, and with the support of your insurance agent, make the decision that fits you best.

Presidential debate 101: Does Romney want extra $2 trillion for Pentagon?

Romney's call for Pentagon spending to be no less than 4 percent of GDP could add $2 trillion to its budget. But Obama's claim that this is money the military doesn't want misses a key issue: civilian control.

Does Mitt Romney really want to provide the Pentagon trillions more than the nation?s generals and admirals have requested? The Obama campaign insists that?s the case. At Tuesday?s presidential debate, while discussing the GOP nominee?s fiscal plans, President Obama put it this way: ?Governor Romney ... also wants to spend $2 trillion on additional military programs, even though the military?s not asking for them."

Romney didn?t really engage in discussion on the issue. But his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan (R) of Wisconsin, did earlier this month in the debate between vice presidential candidates in Kentucky. When Vice President Biden made the $2 trillion assertion, Representative Ryan hit back with his own take: The Obama administration?s plans would actually lead to a reduction in military forces.

?Look, do we believe in peace through strength? You bet we do,? said Ryan.

OK, then. The two sides are lobbing charges back and forth as if they?re engaged in a wonk version of dodge ball. We?ll try to shed some light on this issue as best we can. Remember that big Washington budget numbers are often far squishier than you?d think, given the apparent precision of numerals.

We?ll start with a fact that neither campaign disputes. In a National Security White Paper, the Romney campaign has vowed that it will set a floor for core defense spending at 4 percent of Gross Domestic Product.

By way of comparison, the Obama administration?s 2013 budget proposes a core defense budget ? spending which excludes the costs of war operations ? of about $525 billion, which should be equivalent to about 3.3 percent of GDP.

So how much would it cost to dial defense spending up to 4 percent of US output? Travis Sharp, an analyst at the Center for a New American Security (a think tank founded by two current Obama administration officials), has looked at the question pretty thoroughly. Using Congressional Budget Office numbers to predict economic growth, and figuring that it would take Romney a few years to get up to the 4 percent number, Sharp puts the 10-year cost of total Romney administration defense spending at about $7.8 trillion dollars.

Google draws 25 million new building footprints in Maps, shapes up your neighborhood

The fine, well labeled lines of Google Maps may show a clean layout of your neighborhood, but without buildings, it looks too much like a two-dimensional spread of undeveloped tract housing. Google's finally filling in the gaps, outlining 25 million building footprints in cities all across the United States. Residents of Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Houston, Detroit and other cities can now see the familiar outlines of their local stomping ground on the services' mobile and desktop maps. Most of these buildings were algorithmically generated from aerial photographs, locals can pen in their own content by using Google Map Maker to add new buildings or tag their favorite local eatery. The tweak sounds minor, but it certainly makes the standard map's criss-cross of roads look more familiar. Check out the official Google Lat Long blog below for more details.
